Question about 1998 Lincoln Continental

I can find replacement alternators but, they are either 53 or 59 cm units (whatever that means), is that the depth of the unit? Are they not interchangable as it is a transverse mounted 4.6L engine in all 98s, isnt it? The price difference is over $50, so not inconsequential!

They are referring to the size of the pulley.

there are two different amp ratings. I think the difference in the two is the lower amp alternator lower mounting bolts are slotted. There will be a core charge when you buy the new alternator. If you have the old when when you pick up the new one you can make sure that the pulleys, mounting holes, and amp rating are all correct.

It sounds like to me it is a depth measurement . I would remove the alternator an match it to a new one for proper fit.

How do I fix poor radio recption on a 2012 Grand Vitara Urban fitted with Garmin sat nav/digital radio.

Poor reception and low volume of any radio is mostly caused by poor aerial performance.

If the aerial has been eliminated, the unit is properly grounded, has a good current and voltage supply and the loudspeakers and wiring have all been tested and found to be ok then the fault must be inside the radio.

In lots of parts of the world the ambient temperatures in the height of summer and the depths of winter can be outside the operating temperature range of the radio. It is not wise to switch on when these conditions exist as delicate electronics are easily damaged, especially when condensation might have formed on internal circuit boards.
My father once switched on his car radio after the car had been parked in the sun and something inside failed instantly. The repair guy said it was a common problem.

One further thought. Is the alternator overcharging; producing an excessive voltage that could damage the radio or alternatively is a loose supply or ground connection causing a strong surge current and inducing an excessive voltage in a nearby inductance...

Will tread depth of tires affect accuracy of nitestar dmi?

it will be absolute minimal and would be within the accuracy of the unit
as tread depth is around 3/8" on new tyres and is around 1/8 (legal) on worn tyres as you can see the difference is hardly worth mentioning
if the unit is measuring distance travelled then the shallower the tread depth the greater the chance of tyre slip when driving and that will affect accuracy

Alternator replacement

If in charger you mean the regulator, the alternator/regulator come as one unit. The regulator is inside or attached to the rear of the alternator.

What would cause my 98 jeep grand cherokee 4X4's alternator to intermittently malfunction after a very rough ride?

Is there a chance that you got a lot of moisture in the alternator too? I would check that out but also look to see if the unit is still tight in the bracket and the belt is snug - all with the engine off. Whatever is loose needs to be tightened.

Replaced the clutch (clutch disk & pressure plate), clutch master cylinder, release bearing, and slave cylinder. Took it out for test drive and the clutch is slipping. Not sure how to fix this. Can anyone...

I would check the old slave cylinder against the new, check they are both the same size and that the new one isn't shorter, failing that it would mean taking the box out again and checking the old units against the new, ie height of pressure plates, depth of release bearing etc. Regards Mike

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not charge the battery and will shutter and stall out when the charge gauge bottoms out. codes are 12 & 55.Battery is 1.5 years old. When I remove Battery cable it dies...

I think you have the answer; the alternator is not outputting any voltage. The shuddering is caused by the available service voltage falling below what the electronics (the ECU) can tolerate and causing either the injectors or the ignition circuit to start misfiring. If you can get your Jeep to one of the chain auto parts stores, they can test the alternator for you but I suspect you know what the answer will be. Ask about their warranty on a rebuilt alternator; some offer a 'lifetime' warranty (whatever that means) on rebuilt items. If you choose to replace it yourself, buying the rebuilt unit without your defective one in hand, you will be charged a 'core charge' which is refunded when you return the old unit. You didn't mention which engine it has but on the inline 6 it is a (dirty) but possible DIY task. Make sure you disconnect the negative terminal of your battery even if the battery seems depleted; they still have enough 'juice' to deliver many amps momentarily which is really hard on tools, not to mention the battery's discomfort!
