Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva

I have changed the thermostat and waterpump,the radiator and hoses,and there is no water in the oil so that tells me there is no blown head gasket or cracked head what else could be causing it to overheat?

Smell for exhaust fumes in the radiator with cap off while it is running to check for a small head gasket seepage of compression. Also to narrow it down put a mirror in front of warm spark plug hole to check for steam escaping and fogging the mirror. I have seen water pump blades rotted off and radiators plugged with stop leak.

My 97 jeep wrangler 4.0 is overheating badly,waterpump,thermostat,radiator,clutchfan have all been changed,and no mixing of water and oil what could it be? Also not air locked


do a compression test on cooling system just because no oil and water mix doesnt mean head gasket good ---keep an eye on fluid level possible can be burning the coolant also check flow new doesnt mean free from defects or improper installation [thermostat-water pump]

How can I tell if I have a blown head gasket? Or a bad head??? Car over heats but almost sure it's not the heads? Help


First culprit would be the thermostat not working properly. Next culprit would be a dirty or blocked radiator matrix. I would change the thermostat first and whilst doing that, fully drain the system, and use a radiator flushing liquid, following the instructions.

Head gasket problems are usually diagnosed by water in your oil, it goes milky and you get something that looks like mayonnaise under the oil cap, plus droplets of water. sometimes, but not often you get oil in your water.

The thermostat probably seized. Check the oil for water or large amount of water coming out of the exhaust for a blown head gasket.

How would i know if my overheating problem in my 97 Geo Metro Prizm is a radiator, water pump, blown head gasket, cracked head or a thermostat problem. is there some way i can check for this?


Oil and coolant mixed usually means the engine is damaged.
Blown head gasket, or cracked block - head.
You may have coolant in the engine oil too.
I would not drive it.

My 98 ford contour keeps overheating i just replaced the radiator and the water pump. And there is no water in the oil. The fans work but it still overheats . What else could be causing it to overheat?


I can't believe anyone would replace the waterpump without also replacing the thermostat. Once overheated, a thermostat is no good anymore. It must be replaced.

But that is not the only possibility. You could have a bad head gasket, without having oil in the water. Only a pressure check can tell. You could also have a collapsing lower hose, as water pump suction causes it to pinch off. You could also have an air bubble from not bleeding it properly when refilling. You could also have a loose waterpump belt. You could have put in the wrong waterpump, as the type for normal V-belts runs the opposite direction of the type for serpentine belts.
There are many more, but that is all I could immediately think of.

Overheating all the time


First, anytime a thermostat is overheated, it's ruined.

Second, if this car has electric fans, are they running when they are supposed to? If not, replace the fan control module, and/or test/replace the fan motors.

When the radiator was replaced, were you certain to purge the radiator and engine of all air before replacing the radiator cap? When you refill an emptied system, you always start the engine and watch the fill level in the radiator, refilling as necessary until you know the thermostat has opened. You need to have the heatrer controls set to full hot as well. Once the radiator is filled, put the cap in place, and fill the reservoir to the level indicated for a hot engine.

Finally, check to make sure the lower radiator hose is not collapsing while driving. While this is difficult to check (because your going down the road), just replace it when you replace the thermostat.

All of this assumes you do not have a cracked head or blown head gasket.

2002 honda civic water is blowing out of the coolant tank


Sorry to hear all this has been going on and the obvious hasn't been detected by a shop. All those parts probably would not of had to be replaced. This is a classic systom of a blown head gasket. Not every head gasket blown will have coolant in the oil. Compression leak from a cylinder will enter water passage in head and blow out the coolant because compression is greater pressure than coolant system pressure.

Overheating when driving no mixing of the coolant and oil


The three most likely thing's cause overheating are faulty thermostat,electric fan or clogged radiator. Only at has been overheat so much it boils dry that it will cause engine trouble. Most common problem's are blown cylinder head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
mixing coolant and water depends on where the gasket has blown or head is cracked. You will first need to check if it actually is overheating. The reason is. If the head is cracked or gasket blown then you can get a false boiling which is compresion from the cylinders blows through the crack in the head or gasket causing the coolant to blow out of the radiator cap.Fill the radiator to the top leave the cap off then start the engine.If the water blows out then you will need to remove the cylinder head check the gasket is ok. If its damaged replace if not get the head checked for crack's. If no water blow's when you start it check the thermostat is working properly. To check the thermostat put it a in a saucepan cover it with water bring the water to the boil. It should open before the water boil's but near boiling-point. If its ok then start the engine again leave it running until it boils and check the fan is running. If that's ok then its radiator problem. Their is no way to check if the radiator is ok you will need to get a new one. One last point. If the cylinder head or gasket are faulty it was caused by overheating so by just fixing the cylinder head problem is not a cure it will overheat again. Check the three things I mentioned at the begining and told you how to check them. Hope this help's. Cheer's

1995 legacy 250t wagon - overheating


Two possiblities; a blown head gasket, or a freeze plug leaking. If possible take it to a trusted shop and have the pressure checked on the radiator, they can tell you if your radiator is stopped up, or the freeze plug is leaking, and if it's blowing back in the radiator when you remove the cap then it's a blown head gasket.
