Good Evening, this is a traditional problem with general motors vehicles, an what happens with some time the sensor attatched to the float assembly no longer reads correctly. Very seldom have I run into a ground issue but it is also something to consider is the wiring going to the fuel pump assembly. Your local dealer sells the float assembly itself while all your local parts stores only sell it with the fuel pump. Hope this helps.

Check the connection at the tank, and if it is secure, replace the fuel sending unit, you may have to purchase the whole fuel pump assembly to get the sending unit.

2005 Chevy Malibu the gas guage has stopped working. The guage will go from full to empty over and over. The gas cap light comes on and now my engine light is on constantly. How do I get this fixed for...

hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful

2002 chev malibu gas gage gose to empty E with a full tank of gas

its a problem with your sending unit most likly. its in your gas tank and tells your gauge how much gas is in your tank. I had a chevy truck and a blazer and both of them had this problem. I believe its a problem with all chevy models in my opinon. I would most definatly say that its your sending unit.

Where is the fuel pump located on a chevy malibu

It's located in the gas tank and to replace it, your going to have to drop the gas tank.
Thank you for using fixya and if you are going to replace the fuel pump your self. Make sure you also replace the wire harness from the frame to the fuel pump.

Why would the gas gauge on a 2005 Chevy Malibu go from full to empty while driving when you know the gas tank is full?

This happens on mine, its got to do with the fuel sensor, I frequently fill up and sometimes keep fueling after the nozzle clicks. This is what caused my problem. I have since stopped fueling immediately after it clicks and have not had the problem. Make sure you arent over filling your tank
