if it makes a loud exhaust sound when cold its an exhaust leak. most likely the steel fuel line is leaking. check to make sure your air filter is clean.

GAS SMELL WHEN HEATER IS ON WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

Usually means there is a fuel leak in the engine compartment, and the heater is pulling the fumes into the car thru the vents under the windshield.

Smell of gas and whistling sound

Its all connected.
The computer uses a solenoid to vent the fumes from the tank when the engine is running.
The vapor canister holds the fumes until the vent valve is opened.
The computer tried to vent the tank and something went wrong.
It could be from the excessive heat or something with the venting system.
A mechanic would test the venting system.

Gas fumes coming from behind back tire below fuel tank door?

No hose on the overflow hole.
The cap should click when it is tight.
You may be smelling the vapor canister which is doing its job.
The fuel tank system is sealed so the computer opens a valve from time to time to vent the tank thru the canister. It may be in the engine compartment or around the fuel tank.
If there is a problem with the fuel tank vent system the check engine light should come on.

Gas Smell in Truck Cab

gday mate, geoff here, ok she's an oldy but i bet she's a treat to drive, 1t check the fuel vent, making sure the one at the fuel cap is clear, also check for minute little pin holes where fuel pipe to engine is held to chassis, these are old and my have worn though, the rubbers at this age are due for replacement,ie the fuel tank filler to cap assembly, start there and go through the system, Without missing a hose , and no she looks OK here, check them thoroughly, fuel vapour is cause for explosion, hope this helps start the process, geoff.

99 dodge dakota has gas smell in cab when heater or ac is on

sounds like you need to look through the engine bay and see if your fuel lines are wet anywhere!! There might be a possibilty that you have a leak around the gas tank so jus crawl under the trunk and look to see if it has any kind of wetness around the tank or hoses coming out of the tank!!

Bad smell coming from heater/ smoke coming out vents

I had the same problem in my 98 Dodge Dakota! Replaced the heater core, problem solved. No more funky coolant smell and erie fog coming through my vents. I bought the heater core at rockauto.com online. Have purchased many items now from them. All factory parts so far at half the price of even AutoZone, even with the shipping. Also, you usually have to wait only a couple of days depending on the part and they have EVERYTHING.
