Question about 2001 Suzuki Vitara

2 Answers

I have a problem with my Suzuki idling too low when in gear 500 rpm--1000 in park, then dying when in gear and at a stop--It does this sometimes and then stops for a week. It will run fine for a while and then just start dying anytime I bring it to a stop. Sometimes I start it and it will shudder and die. I took it to Suzuki and first they thought it was my "nonfactory remote". I had them take that out and the problem continued. They then hooked it to the computer said it was the air control valve--$1100 later for this's still doing the same thing. This is the second time this part has been replaced as Carmax replaced it the day I bought it for doing the same thing the day I brought it home. The code on the computer was T0122. The Suzuki service department is trying to get me to spend $360 for a tuneup and induction something saying that would "help" fix the problem--since it's only had 6000 miles put on it since this was last done, I'm seriously doubting that's the issue and get the impression that they are going to have me just keep dumping money into troubleshooting rather than pinpoint the problem. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but at times the key does not want to turn in the ignition. Any ideas??

01 vitara
no engine stated G16, J20, H25, H27? engine? must we guess?
no country stated, (more engines not in usa, for sure)
fails hot and cold engine ill pretend you said hot only,(gee , no?)_
ill pretend USA>
when it tries to stall, that is the word, STALLS
at 500 or less it surely will stall. 800rpm hot is spec regulated RPM. the computer brain works hard to do that.
my guess it runs perfect in the shop, so they too must guess..
right,? they cant fix any engines that run good , while tested.
in fact telling them to fix a running good engine is and implied
order for them to GUE$$ and they WILL.
and it WILL be costly.

why not do simple tests yourself./
next time it goes to 500rpm try adding a very tiny bit if throttle
rpm rises now ,
kinda hard
impossible (if this is true that $1100 part was NOT BAD)
easy can be ISC bad ,
if the EGR sticks open, then the above correction will work but tad hard, takes more right foot actions.
EGR stuck open cause low idle. the valve must be closed at idle or it will stall or run as low as 400 rpm and engine shakes badly.

if it had a tuneup 6000 miles ago correct. it needs none now.

why not avoid STEALERSHIPs, all they do is build tickets.
find a ASE shop, GOOGLE, "find ASE shops by zip."
and win,.
tell them all above. you said
like this
engine stalls lots of times
engine new IAC
fresh tuneup.
is it my EGR sticking? say?>?

if you had told what engine you had, we can answer 10x better
but I CANT.
Ill guess one engine, for your J20, 2,0L DOHC engine
the COP boots are bad.
a tune up, a car like this 2001 with old boots is hopeless.
the engine has, 4 cylinders and 4 cop coils and 4 boots.
the boots are toasted now.
or if you remove the 4 cops(takes skills)
you see oil flooding there, that is a bad valve cover gasket set
leaking oil there and will short out the spark plugs.
we just look.
the v6 is same, story.

P0122 is TPS sensor not calibrated, or set wrong or shorted to ground. no engine no help here.
btw, if the TPS is failing, the ECU can not discover you are at idle.
so the ECU cuts the idle conntrols
and idle will too low in gear.

Some engines have a auto, calibration on TPS, my H27 had that.
do not ignore, DTC errors.

the best way to fix cars like this is SCAN it driving
there is no better way to see it fail LIVE.
but most shops are to busy making cash to actually drive and test.
btw a suzuki with a new TPS can throw 122 code
then go away after driving it and its TPS autolearn completes.
again, no country stated
no engine stated
not must help.,

Induction clean,(that means intake manifold clean inside)sometimes that area throttle body, and intake manifold get contaminated , and make that problems (low idle) . take it to you mecanic and ask for; throttle and intake manifold service. on the ignition switch spray some w40 in where the key goes.. ( if you want to do the clean service yourself go get intake manifold cleaner at the autoparts and follow the instructions (how to apply it).

I have a 1995 C280 Mercedes Benz when in park or neutral idles real low as it is about to die then idles back up to 1000 rpm and continue to do the same. usually stays running though. In drive or reverse...

Not a Mercedes man but if it was a domestic I would say check the readings on the Throttle position sensor first. it should not change unless the throttle is physically moved. after that check the Idle air control valve motor. Hopes this helps. if it was a fuel issue should do it in gear at idle also.

Will start, then stops. stops when put in gear

sounds like the idle is set way too low on it.. there should be an idle screw on the trottle body.. just turn ut clock wise and it will slowly increase the idle rpm. make sure you do it in park though with the vehicle running. once it reaches 750 to 900 rpm stop and try it then it should stop dying..

near the throttle body there is an adjusting screw(flat head) for air fuel mixture, it's on a deep cavity sometimes with a cover, adjust counterclockwise will increase the idle.

with a 2002 Concord 3.5 V-6, what should the rpm be at 60mph? 70 mph?

I'm not sure if the overdrive gear is lost in the tranny, but the transmission light is on.
