Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

The tensioner has grinded into my engine about 1/16 of an inch. Is this going to be a problem beyond replacing the tensioner?

Squealing altenator belt


Incorrect tension on belt, press on belt between 2 pulleys. Should only have about 6 to 10 mm (3/8 ins) of movement.
If movement is excessive check the tensioner arm for spring tension and range of movement. If the grooved side of the belt has cracks or missing rubber, replace the belt as it has aged and is beyond service life.

if its a chain there is none but check for noise from the guides and tensioner if you hear a grinding sound from engine or a rubbing noise then you should check the guides or tensioner for ware

Serpentine belt tensioner replacement


looking at diagram 2.2l engine to remove belt tensioner held in place by two bolts dont remove center bolt to tensioner just the two side mounting bolts one on each side.

Tensioner Pulley is grinding


Remove the serpentine belt(s) and spin all the pulleys by hand. If one sounds loud, replace it.

I need to replace the serpentine belt but i do not know where the tensioner is or how to loosen it


Hi, use a 3/8 inch flex handle or ratchet inserted into the square hole on the extended part of the tensioner as shown in the picture below and rotate counterclockwise to relive tension on the belt. Let me know if you have more questions and thanks for using FixYa.

One of the circular pieces that the serpentine belt goes around is grinding into the engine. can this be fixed?


It sounds like you may be describing a belt tensioner.
This is a roller that has a spring force which keeps the belt tight.
The entire tensioner assembly can be replaced, or in some cases you can just replace the roller.

I have a 1925 vintage Riley sidevalve car engine. How tight/slack should the chain be over the sprockets? There is no tensioner but the dynamo has an eccentric shaft driven by the chain, and the dynamo can...


Sounds like a bit of logic will accomplish a level of tension that will allow running without permitting the chain to climb the teeth to a point where a skip or jump off chain occurs. Just beyond that tension would seem practical while minimizing wear.
Sounds like a fun car. Maybe you will become the only Riley specialist !

How do i release the tension on serpentine belt for replacement on 2000 chev tracker 2.0 eng suzuki engine


There should be a square1/2 inch hole most likely on the bar that leads to the tension pully, where you can put a 1/2 inch breakover bar or ratchet to depress the tension bar/spring, alowing the removal and replacement of the belt.

WARNING Do not attempt to check belt tension with a belt tension gauge on vehicles equipped with an automatic belt tensioner.

Drive belts on diesel engines are equipped with a spring loaded automatic belt tensioner. This belt tensioner will be used on all belt configurations, such as with or without air conditioning.
  1. Depending on the year of the vehicle, a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch square hole is provided in the automatic belt tensioner. Attach a 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drive-long handle ratchet to this hole.
  2. Rotate ratchet and tensioner assembly clockwise (as viewed from front) until tension has been relieved from belt.
  3. Remove belt from water pump pulley first.
  4. Remove belt from vehicle.

To install:

WARNING When installing the accessory drive belt, the belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction. The correct belt with correct length must be used. Position drive belt over all pulleys except water pump pulley.


  1. Attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to tensioner.
  2. Rotate ratchet and belt tensioner clockwise. Place belt over water pump pulley. Let tensioner rotate back into place. Remove ratchet. Be sure belt is properly seated on all pulleys.

F-250 Belt Removal
  1. Install a 16-mm (5/8-inch) closed end wrench for 7.5L engines or a 15-mm (19/32-inch) closed end wrench for 5.8L and 7.3L engines on the tensioner pulley bolt and lift the tensioner arm away from the belt.
  1. Remove belt. Release tensioner arm slowly. Do not allow arm to snap back after the belt is removed because this may damage the tensioner.
