Question about Ford F-150

3 Answers

I have a 1990 Ford F150 XLT Lariat pickup with a 5.0 engine. The truck starts okay when cold, once it starts, after 2 or 3 minutes, it doesn't start right away. If I add fuel to intake, it starts and idles well (little high), seems the fuel helps. Could it be the distributor module? Does the module provide rich/lean signal to computer? Thanks in advance.

I have a 1990 Ford F150 pu with 5.0 fuel injection engine , what should the fuel pressure be at the fuel injector rail with key one engine off and with engine running? The vehicle starts when cold and won't start after it gets warm, about 2-3 minutes of running time.

  • Ursulo Robles Oct 12, 2010

when it starts cold, it won't accelerate. It stalls and cuts out and engine dies. But, when the engine is warm, it won't start at all, unless I add fuel to the intake. This engine ( 5.0 litre) is a fuel injected engine without a mass air sensor on the air cleaner. What do you think? What should the fuel pressure be at the fuel rail when key on engine off or engine running? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
first of all could i just ask that when you start it say first thing in the morning does it run perfect and drive perfect until the engine warms up, let me know as it narrows things down a bit for me.

if it dont run better from cold then if you know how to take the air filter out could you take it out and put the air box back together then start it up and see if that makes any difference, then let me know if it changes the problem at all let me know if it makes it worse or any better or if it stays the same.

the main problem is without doing a diagnostic check you could end up throwing hundreds of pound or dollars down the car spares shop and still not solve the problem as the fault could be 1 of a number of possible causes or couple of things at fault.

if it runs perfect from cold then plays up when engine is warm then it could be things such as the oxygen sensor(lambda sensor for its proper name) but their is more than one so without the test you would not know what to change, it could also be the cat converter if you have one fitted.

if how ever the problem is their all the time even from cold start then the problem could be things such as mass air flow sensor ( this is why i said try taking the filter our as this increases the air flow) it could also be dodgy fuel, blocked injectors, faulty vac pipe or even worse case a faulty ecu.

let me know what happens with what i told you to try then it may narrow the problem down a bit.

also try leaving the fuel filler cap off because if the breather from the tank is blocked then this would cause a vacuum in the tank and it would restrict the fuel flow.
try all the things seperate then let me know then ill do my best to assist you further ok

Hi,

You need to check your thermo sensor which is the sensor that gives the computer the rich/lean signal.

9 times out of 10 this is the cause.

Let me know if you need more information

Thanks

Jason

'90's pump is for a carby and doesn't run at a high enough pressure for the EFI to work right. Get the correct in-tank pump.

Also, could sound like a bad starter solenoid when it does it jump the soleniod and see if the starter turns normally is it does replace the soleniod.

I had a similar problem. There was a bad connection on the starter and the battery. I replaced the battery terminal connector on the positive terminal. On the starter, there is a press-on connector on the starter that was arcing and making a bad connection on mine. I cut it off, put a ring connector on it and bolted it on the starter like the rest of the connections. I don't know if this helps, keep us updated.

Good luck.

    VOLUME TEST

    1. Operate the engine at the specified idle rpm.

    CAUTION
Never smoke when working around gasoline! Avoid all sources of sparks or ignition. Gasoline vapors are EXTREMELY volatile!

    2. Open the hose restrictor and catch the fuel in the container while observing the time it takes to pump 1 pint. 1 pint should be pumped in 20 seconds. If the pump does not pump to specifications, check for proper fuel tank venting or a restriction in the fuel line leading from the fuel tank to the carburetor before replacing the fuel pump.

Check all wires and switch used to wire the push button ignition. Make sure none have melted due to the stress from hard starting in cold weather. If a thick enough guage of wire was not used it will get hot and could melt.

It uses too much fuel. 2,6 liter per 10 km.

You need to replace the sensors,,Throttle PositioningSensor, OXYGEN sensors, Mass Air Flow. after which your truck will run nicer and use less fuel.
