Principles of Operation
The PATS uses a specially encoded ignition key. Each encoded ignition key contains a permanently installed electronic device called a transponder. Each transponder contains a unique electronic identification code out of over 18 billion, billion combinations.
The passive anti-theft system (PATS), also known as SecuriLock ®, uses radio frequency identification technology to deter a drive-away theft. This system is known as SecuriLock® in North America, Safeguard® in the U.K., and PATS in Continental Europe. Passive means that it does not require any activity from the user.
The SecuriLock® System (PATS) is not compatible with aftermarket remote start systems, which allow the vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. If equipped the remote start system must be removed before investigation of PATS-related, no-start issues.
Each encoded ignition key must be programmed into the vehicle's powertrain control (PCM) before it can be used to start the engine. There are special diagnostic repair procedures described in this section that must be carried out if a new encoded ignition key is necessary.
This system contains a new feature named Unlimited Key Mode. This feature allows a customer to program more than eight keys to the vehicle if they request it. Each vehicle in Unlimited Key Mode is set up with a special Unlimited Transponder Security Key. This allows all the customer vehicles to share the same keys, but no other keys from outside can be used to operate the vehicles. For an individual customer, any randomly selected Security Key is acceptable. Refer to Unlimited Key Mode Programming in Key Programming Switch State Control in this section.
The PATS transceiver module communicates with the encoded ignition key. The module is located behind the steering column shroud and contains an antenna connected to a small electronics module. During each vehicle start sequence, the transceiver module reads the encoded ignition key identification code and sends data to the PCM.
The control functions are contained in the PCM. This module carries out all of the PATS functions, such as receiving the identification code from the encoded ignition key and controlling the engine enable. The PCM initiates the key interrogation sequence when the vehicle ignition switch is turned to RUN or START.
All elements of the PATS must be functional before the engine is allowed to start. If any of the components are not working correctly, the vehicle will not start.
The PATS uses a visual theft indicator. The indicator will prove out for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START under normal operation. If there is a PATS concern, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. The PATS system also flashes the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual deterrent.
The PATS will be activated and will disable the vehicle from starting if there is a:

  • incorrectly encoded ignition key
  • damaged encoded ignition key
  • unprogrammed key
  • non-encoded key (key has no electronics)
  • damaged wiring
  • damaged transceiver
  • damaged PCM

Your ignition requires a radio signal from a chip inside your key to start the car . Your car wont start because you are using the wrong key, your ignition is no longer able to read the key (ignition replacement), or your key is malfunctioning.

Try re-setting the computer...Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and leave off for 5-10 minutes. This will allow the computer to reset. The charger may have interupted the signal or something.

Can I have more info.

1. is there any pressure in the fuel tank when you remove the cap?
2. have you tried leaving the battery off for 24hrs then reconnect?
3. has any other work been done recently such as starter motor or altenator etc, for the battery to drain it could be a parasitic electrical drain this can happen if a relay is sticking, a module is not turning off, or a shorted diode in the alternator itself is faulty.

You are right.Its the key code problem. As per the manual it says:--- sometimes when the battery is disconnected or has to be recharged - this happens. The computer forgets the key code and the key has to be re-coded. The ford service center/dealer charge $35 to $50 for recoding the key and this makes the car to function properly and it starts . ---------------- Also check the code in your car:--- under the plastic-passenger side under the very back window-next to rear passenger door jam-Looks like a black box. The Original Code is on a tag on that box.But if its not there then dealer is other option/.It takes few minutes to get recoded.----------------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

From my experience...
A non PATS coded key SHOULD not turn the STARTER...!

If ANTI-THEFT were invoked... you can attain a not start condition which the Owners Manual says must be cleared by the dealer.

A working PATS key should disable the anti theft... by turning the ignition on... ELSE try your other key.

The SecuriLock [PATS]
passive anti-theft system is not compatible with
non-Ford aftermarket remote start systems. Use of these systems may
result in vehicle starting problems and a loss of security protection.

Where is the pats override button located? specific under dash location. 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD


There is no PATS override button. PATS is Passive Anti-Theft System. It is a transponder chip in the key, and a transceiver ring around the ignition lock cylinder. The Ring looks for the correct chip in a key in order to allow the vehicle to start. A bypass or override button in the vehicle completely advantage of having the chip system and would render is useless in entirety.

99 explorer alarm disables. Motor dies


Anti-theft system can keep vehicle from starting , Alarm is for vehicle content theft , open door without key alarm sounds (horns) ! PATS - passive anti theft system PATS enables and disables the engine from starting ,it will not cause the engine to die ! You have some other kind of problem ! If the vehicle engine doesn't turn over an red light on top of dash flashes fast ,then you have anti-theft system problem !
PATS differs from the perimeter anti-theft system in that PATS enables and disables the engine from starting. If equipped, the perimeter anti-theft system protects the perimeter of the vehicle (doors, hood and trunk) and sounds an alarm.

The passive vehicle protection system will be activated and will disable the vehicle from starting if there is a:
  • damaged encoded key.
  • unprogrammed key.
  • non-encoded key (key has no electronics).
  • wiring concern.
  • transceiver concern.
  • PCM concern.
  • module communications network concern.
Reset ? IF your anti-theft system light is flashing when trying to start your vehicle , an the engine doesn't crank , turn , or nothing happens when you turn key , then your anti theft system is at fault ! An trying to reset will not work ,you need to have it checked DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ,then fixed ! I suggest you have it towed to the dealer or a ASE certified repair shop !
PATS uses the powertrain control module (PCM) to enable or disable the engine. The PATS module communicates with the PCM over the SCP communication network in order to enable engine operation. The PATS module and the PCM use sophisticated messages in order to prevent a theft. The PATS and the PCM share security data when first installed together, making them a matched pair. After this security data sharing, these modules will not function in other vehicles. The PCM shared security ID is remembered even if the battery is disconnected. The PATS module also stores the vehicle's key identification code, even if the battery is disconnected. There are special diagnostic repair procedures outlined in this workshop manual that may be carried out if either the PATS module or the PCM needs replacement.

2002 Ford Explorer. Drove to the store turned it off went in came out 2 minutes later and it won't start or even make a noise but it is getting power. What could it be?

If there is a PATS problem, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. PATS also "blips" the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual theft deterrent.

I accidentaly broke my key for my 2000 Ford Explorer,and I changed out the ignition and collumn the car turns over but it wont start.But my anti theft is activated .How do I disable or turn off the an


The old key may have an induction chip in to deactivate the anti theft system. Does it have a red insert (chip) in the key handle? Get the old key and place it as close to the ignition barrel as possible. Seen this done on a number of occasions to save paying for a key reprogram.

jump starting an engine will sometimes corrupt the program in the CPU . I would have the CPU reset using a code reader first so that the immobiliser was reset before I did anything else.

HOW TO RESET OR DISARMED ALARM SYSTEM


The PATS system resets itself after 10 minutes.
Is the red light on the instrument flashing on and off every 10 seconds or so?
