Question about 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet
This sounds like you have a communication problem between one of the sensors which send a signal to the ECM to switch the fuel injectors on.
Check your cam position sensor and the crank angle sensor these are the 2 sensors which can cause this problem.

You will need to clean the dirty dirty fuel injectors and replace the Idle Air Control valve (IAC)
