It matters what kind of transmission you have. my 85 jeep cj7 has stock dana 300 tranfer case. the pattern goes like this

Accelerated from a stop and heard a loud bang coming from rear of jeep and then it wouldn;t go anywhere i put it in reverse and then it moved forward i have a 1985 cj7


Distributor shifted on you and timing is out of phase. turn the distributor about 1/4 inch counter clockwise with your hands and test drive it . if it improves you have a busted bolt on the core (not uncommon for an old CJ) .. may need to tighten bolt or drill out a new thread and put a tight bolt in . When you are out of phase, it sounds like you have an exhaust problem , loud noise in exhaust and no compression nor acceleration , except in lower (high rev) gears. jorge diaz

85 jeep cj7 goes into gear but will not move.


if you did a body lift your trasfer case may not be ingear

What kind of oil goes in the transfer case


It depends on your transfer case

spicer 18 and 20 takes 80W-90 gear oil
dana 300 takes 85W-90 gear oil.

I personally don't think it would matter either way if you put 85 or 80. They both lube well. Thats my opinion.

Dextron III ATF (automatic transmission fluid) will work in this transfere case just fine

I want to flat tow my 85 cj7 to my ranch...about 300 miles one way....is it safe? what do i need to do???


safest way is to remove to drive shaft, otherwise make sure transfer case is in nuetral like the trans

1985 cj7 6cyl starts up just fine and then it wont


Sound like either fuel or ignition. Have you replaced any fuel filters? I would check the condition of the distributor cap and wires as well. Moisture could be a factor.
