I have a mechanical fuel pump that is run by the camshaft it seems to have to be pushed in not up and down the lobe is not large enough to push up and down

Anon, Some older vehicles fuel pumps were driven using cam lobe or a attached Eccentric, egg shape collar. You may have wrong pump, lobe worn off, you could be missing a drive pin (this would allow further reach from lobe to pump arm). Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Still wondering if a new fuel filter comes with new fuel pump?

Most cars have a strainer before the pump inlet and a inline external fuel filter. some have the filter and pump as one unit installed in the tank. the fuel gauge and float are attached to this unit . it is possible that the pump relay may be on the way out.

How to change 1984 chrysler new yorker 2.6l from an electric fuel pump to a mechanical fuel pump.

Replace the mechanical pump with a new unit and that will remove any reason of broken/failure from the equation. Remove the electric pump altogether and leave 1 filter in the line before the mechanical pump. Mechanical pumps are not in favour with some people who have no idea that they can be adjusted to give more pressure and greater volume for the bigger capacity engines. Some mechanical pumps are more expensive to repair / replace but if you price an electric pump to supply the volume that a properly adjusted or a larger capacity mechanical pump then the cost saving is minimal. Unless you get a fuel filter that is rated with a smaller micron rating than the standard filter any number of filters will not work as the smallest particle will get through the lot

Fuel pump comes on some time when you turn on the ignition some times it doen't. Wait a while turn ignition back on and it will run.

The relay or fuel pump is going bad. Probably a fuel pump.

Mechanical Fuel Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The fuel pump is located on the passengers side of the engine towards the front of the car. Fig. 1: Fuel system component layout — carbureted models 86835007.gif

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fuel pump cover.
  2. Clamp the fuel lines closed with fuel line clamps or equivalent, to prevent fuel from running out. Wrap a rag around the fuel lines and disconnect them from the fuel pump. NOTE: When disconnecting the fuel lines, twist and slide them off to avoid damage.
  3. Remove the fuel pump retaining bolts and remove the pump from the engine. To Install:
  4. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and using a new gasket, install the fuel pump in position on the block.
  5. Tighten the fuel pump retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Reconnect the fuel lines and make sure that they are tightly clamped. Do not over tighten the clamps or you will damage the hoses.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable and start the vehicle. Check for leaks at the fuel pump.

Fuel Pump Installation

Since the reverse of dis-assembling is assembling then you have to do is this. the owner of the car should locate where the place the fuel pump is to your car .Prepare the tools and equipment in fuel pump installation. So that the fuel pump will operate properly. Then Connect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. Then place or connect the fuel pump to the engine. But if the owner don't have to place the fuel pump to the car, then the owner should go to a car mechanic and let them place the fuel pump in the car.

Would it be eiser to install an electric fuel pump or go ahead and replace the machanicle fuel pump, on an 1984 s15 with the 2.8, v6

the electric fuel pump would be to much pressure. The mechanical pump only put out 6psi while the electric would be about 35psi and then you would need a mechanical fuel regulator to lower the pressure. So i would put in the mechanical pump.

Ford F100 Truck Fuel Pump

To my knowledge, most Ford models of this year uses a mechanical (diaphragm type) fuel pump not electrical. However, it is possible to install an aftermarket electric fuel pump in lieu of the mechanical pump. If this was done to your Ford F 100, it would either be either near the carbs or the fuel tank, follow the fuel line.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
