Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I was chasing an oil leak on my 2002 passat V8 4M wagon and pulled a coolant hose. The engine was hot. All the fluids ran out. I let the engine cool, replaced the coolant, started the engine, topped the fluids off. Something is not right. Now on start up, the fan runs at max speed, and when I shut the engine off, the fan continues to run for several minutes. A local mechanic says I should not drive it because there is no coolant circulating because of an air bubble. Is there anything I can do as a quick fix to drive it to the mechanic?

On a acura MDX 2002 the a/t light with temp came on fluid leaking from under and a burnt smell

Hi It sounds like you have a hose leaking from the radiator system and the smell and is hot coolant on the exhausmanifold and the rest of the engine ,could be fan belt missing or loose, hose split ,thermostat sticking shut etc answer check coolant fill to level only, check fan belt, start and check the hoses and look for leaks ,you might find it only leaks when it starts to get hot but it is a coolant leak.

Car overheated and lost all power. how do I get it to start?

ENGINE NOT GOING TO START IF GET TOO HOT FIRST THING I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP THEN ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT THATS WHEN THERMOSTAT OPEN UP AND TOP HOSE HOT.CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE CHECK BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.CHECK FOR LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BELOW COOLANTS FANS CHECK FOR LEAKS AT RADIATOR CORES OR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS. CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE HEATER HOSES AROUND ENGINE BLOCK TO THE HEATER CORE HOSES. THERE IS A REASON CAR OVERHEAT.IF CAR OVERHEAT WHILE DRIVING YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMOSTAT OR LEAKING OUT COOLANT OR BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF ENGINE OVER HEAT WHILE SITTING DURING A LONG IDLING PERIOD.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULTY COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.HOT WIRE COOLANT TO SEE IF IT RUNS IF NO REPLACE FAN MOTOR. IF YES FAN MOTOR COULD HAVE FAULTY WIRE OR PCM FAILURE. CHECK ENGINE CRANKCASE IF OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE ENGINE HEAD GASKET LEAKING.

Temperature light came on 2002 VW Passat wagon backing out of garage today, slight burning smell. Returned after 2 miles. Have experienced this smell on and off since oil & filter change several weeks...

You can see the coolant level by looking through the opaque round coolant reservoir. It should be just over the middle. There's a line indication proper level. Orange Dexcool meets the VW specification and is generally available. The rear coolant flange can warp and seep over time and leaks onto hot parts. That's probably why you smell it.

2002 malibu runs hot.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

I have oil all over the hose behind the engine. Not sure if it's the hose or the engine that is spurting oil.

Check the motor oil and coolant level and top them off when the engine is cold.
Place a white card board on the ground to catch fluid while you idle the engine for few minutes.
If it's motor oil then come out of the rear main seal. The oil will leak out on the lowest spot (WHERE ENGINE MEET the transmission)
If it's coolant then it will be green and the leak can come the heater core hoses (inlet / outlet) or freeze plugs.
Ran the car for few minutes to catch a larger sample of the leaking fluid.

My car ran hot and I want to know is it gonna be a lot of money to get it fixed?

You can answer your own question better than anyone. Check coolant level and thermostat operation first. Check everything for leaks. Coolant coming out of anywhere is not acceptable. White smoke from tail pipe, coolant in engine oil or oil in coolant, indicates an internal engine problem (head gasket or internal crack). I've listed a bunch of stuff. It's up to you to check and narrow down the problem!!!
good luck, post back if you need help with any of this.

Power steering oil disapears 2003 WV passat

likely either the steering rack&pinion assembly is leaking or the hoses to it are leaking, have it put on a lift to see which steering componet the fluid is leaking from.
