Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Gran Am with a 2.2liter, auto. I have been having a drivablity problem. At first, when parking on an incline, it would idle rough while in gear like it had a bad miss. For the last few weeks without a sign, it started getting worse. When you start it after sitting overnight or when leaving work , it will idle like it is running on 3 cylinders and will surge badly. Will want to die when coming to a stop, but when driving at freeway speeds, runs fine. You have to feather the gas or put it in netrual to keep it running at a stop..the weird part is that after driving on the freeway for about 10 miles, it will be fine, just hard starting, but doesn't run like it is on 3 cylinders....check engine lite is off and on with only a code p0300 for a misfire.

I know that the CPS has allot to do with engine performance. But why would it start to drive better after warming up? It is now starting to act like it wants to cut out and surges all the time when it comes to a stop and is constantly hesitating....I will replace the CPS, but could there be another problem????

Hi! Please have the CPS (crank position sensor) be checked, this has big contribution on engine performance. If the cps is faulty you'll surely have misfires. Hope this shed some light and have a good one!

My 2003 ford escape 6 cylinder has a rough idle at start, almost like when a vehicle runs out of gas and it also does it on inclines. Ive already changed the fuel filter. Thought it may be the IAC valve.

IAC yes it can but it would not affect high speed condition so let rule it out. A open PCV valve or rupture vacuum hose can do it but again it wont affect high speed (going on a incline ) so the only thing that can cause rough idle and drivablity on incline would be a misfire you will need to remove the (COP) coil on plug and inspect the boot area for any burn through or better yet clean the top of the COP. Then closely inspect the top and check for any crack at the expoxy (they have a tendency the crack) and that would cause the problem you are dealing with

2000 gran prix 3.1 runs fine while driving, but when stopped at a light starts to idle rough

Take the EGR Valve off and clean all the carbon out of it using something to scrape with and use a non-chlorinated brake cleaner.Whenever an EGR Valve gets stuck in the open position it allows exhast gasses into the intake manifold causing the engine to idle really rough, but after you get up to say 45-55 its smooths out thats when the valve should be open.

Service engine soon light is on

bring your expedition to advance auto or autozone to scan your vehicle for the error code(its free) and post the code. Do you notice any drivable issues, such as rough idle, jerking motion etc??

Rough idle and hi idle

check for vacuum leak. Has someone changed the pcv? If so they may have left off the o-ring seal off the bottom of it.
