Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • Metric combination wrench set
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet wrench
  • 12 mm socket
  • Knock sensor
  1. Open the hood, and disconnect the battery negative cable with a wrench.
  2. Locate the black rubber air intake tube that runs from the air cleaner box to the throttle body on top of the engine.
  3. Loosen the clamp on the air intake tube at the throttle body with a wrench. Grasp the tube and pull it off the throttle body inlet, and move it out of the way.
  4. Locate the knock sensor. It's bolted to the engine near the throttle body. Remove the hold-down bolt attaching the knock sensor to the engine block, using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet wrench with a 12 mm socket attached.
  5. Follow the electrical lead of the knock sensor to its connector, and simultaneously lift the plastic tab with your hand while gently pulling apart the plug.
  6. Remove the knock sensor from the engine bay. Compare the old sensor to your new part to ensure they are identical.
  7. Reattach the knock sensor to the engine block by threading in the original holding bolt by hand. Snug the bolt with the ratchet wrench and 12 mm socket. Do not over-tighten the bolt.
  8. Plug the new knock sensor into the original electrical plug.
  9. Gently push the throttle body air intake tube onto the throttle body. Tighten the hose clamp with a wrench.
  10. Reconnect the battery's negative terminal with a wrench. Close the hood.
  11. Start your Subaru's engine. Take the car on a test-drive and verify that the spark knock has disappeared.

    the light will only clear if the problem is no longer present, this assumes you have already disconnect the battery negative for 3 minutes to clear out the code and the light has come back on with same code, is this the case?

2000 outback hesitation and stumble on light acceleration

knock sensor could be bad, forcing ECU to retard timing. This is one sensor where you can save money with a cheap Ebay unit. Sometimes a dirty throttlebody will have issues at the transition from idle to off-idle. Idle Air Control could also be dirty/gummy. SeaFoam spray or taking the IAC off and cleaning it would be cheap to try.

You have to hook an OBD 2 scan tool up to the data link connector and check to see what code is present. If you have a knock sensor code, you need to replace the knock sensor. If you get a P0420: Catalyst system efficiency below threshold, you will need to replace your catalytic converter. But if it is nothing important, the only way to clear a check engine light is with a scan tool. You can usually go to any aftermarket parts store and they will check and clear you codes and light for free. I hope this info helps.

before you start taking stuff apart, make sure that the knock sensor is bad and not the wires. test for ground and continuity on the signal wire from the sensor connector to the pin on the pcm connector. google "testing knock sensor" for more info

Check engine light, knocking? PCV Valve?

I have this same vehicle. The "check engine" light warns you that the input from a sensor is not valid. To locate the problem sensor you need to have the fault codes downloaded and interpreted. I am sure your PCV has little to do with this. The burning smell cold be oil from your transaxle seals being thrown up onto the exhaust pipes. The outback is a sophistecated and refined vehicle that requires sophisticated equipment to work on it. If you have engine "knocking" it is likely to be the knock sensor and if this is the case, you need to have it remedied very quickly

Hiya,

Here you go:

2.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  3. Vehicles with 5-spd transmission: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and set aside.
  4. Disconnect the knock sensor wire harness retainer from the coolant hose.
  5. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) wire connector.
  6. Remove the mounting bolt and knock sensor from the engine block.

What should I check on a 97 Subaru Outback that shows a knock sensor code?

the knock sensor itself can be faulty if there is a code showing for it.

CEL lights only come on if a sensor fails its diagnostic, it is nothing to do with the particular sensors readings, but telling you the sensor itself is bad.

The knock sensor is a little microphone attached directly to the cylinder block side wall.

I have somes REV. problem. When I check whit the scanner throw me 2 codes: P1133 / P0325. Its a Outback S/W 2000 2.5l.Thanks for everything.

Off hand sounds like the wires. The first is the O2 sensor getting slow response. The other is your knock sensor. If the wires are in bad shape or coroded conection on the knock sensor this will confuse the computer and change timing and idle to correct it until it gets a good reading from knock sensor. This also slows the response to the exhaust system giving the sensor a slow or poor reading of exhaust gases. Hope this helps and have a good day.
