Question about Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

My 1999 Chevy Tahoe is not switching into 4wd. When I press the switch to engage it, the light just blinks at me. Same with 4 low. I can hear something engage but the front tires just wont turn. Any idea on what it could be?

Okay, I checked where you were talking about and I see wires going into the differential. It's a plug that plugs into something on the differential itself. I thought that might be the actuator itself but I'm not sure if it is or how to take it out cause I don't see any bolts or anything like that.

First check fluid levels. Then I suggets inspect the electrical connector from the indicator switch, this is located on the upper right side of the differential. This problem, about slow or no engagement when 4WD is selected, request replace Front Axle Actuator.
- Replacing the actuator itself is a pretty simple job.
- Remove the connector.
- Unscrew the actuator.
- Put some goo(thread sealer) on the threads of the new actuator if it doesn't already have it.
- Screw in the actuator.
- Plug in connector.

The replacing the transfer case switch will take more time.

Keep us uodated.

This is easy fix and anyone with a 15mm socket and a large adjustable wrench can do the replacement!! I also like to have a buddy to shift into 4wd while I'm watching the actuator and some beer naturally.

To get at the part jack the truck up on stands until you're comfortable under the truck (I had the front tires 3-4 inches off the ground). Take off the skidplate if eqquiped- it's 4 15mm bolts. I threw some wd40 on them and had a beer before going at them: they came out very easily for a 1995.

With the skid plate off and the new part in hand look on the right side of the front diff in front of the axle. You'll see the identical part, follow the wire, and unplug it. You'll have to remove the wire from the clip, as the actuator side of the wire is what's clipped to the frame- just push up on it gently.

Using a large adjustable wrench remove the acutator. Chances are it's covered in grease/fluid as it burst and is no longer usable. to test, plug it into the plug, put the vehicle in the "ON" position (DO NOT START THE TRUCK!) and move the shifter to the "N" position. Chaulking the wheels prior is a good idea. Shift the 4x4 lever into 4Hi - hold the actuator by the wires, not the body: it will get warm. If the actuator doesn't pop out after 30 seconds you've most likely found the culprit. Shift back to 2Hi, unplug the old actuator, and plug in the new.

Shift to 4Hi- if the plunger slowly moves out wait for it to illuminate the 4x4 light in the cab and then shift to 2hi and watch it go back in: you've found the problem and are about to fix it! If it doesn't come out after 15-30 seconds, you actuator isn't the issue. Inspect the old one- if it looks good you may consider putting it back in and returning the new, otherwise continue the installation and troubleshoot the problem further afterwords with a part ruled out.

Unplug the actuator, thread it gently in and tighten with no more than 15ftlbs of force- read:hand tight. plug the wire in and clip it to where the old one came off. Reinstall the skid plate, take the truck off stands and celebrate your fixed truck.

Here the TSB about models: 1988-97 Chevrolet and GMC K Models excluding 1988-93 Models over
8500 # GVW This bulletin is being revised to add information to the
Service Procedure, add a new part number, and include schematics.

    Please
discard Corporate Bulletin Number 76-43-01 (Section 4 - Drive Axle).
Condition Some owners may comment that the Colder the outside
temperature is, the longer it takes for the front axle to engage when 4
wheel drive is selected, or the front axle does not engage.

    Cause: The
front axle engagement actuator is a thermally activated component.
Because of this characteristic, the time required for the actuator to
complete 4 wheel drive engagement is extended as the temperature drops.

Correction: Replace the front axle actuator and include the applicable
wiring harness kit. Refer to the Parts Information in order to determine
which wiring harness kit is needed. 1996 model trucks with a build date
on or after January 2, 1996 are considered as "961′. If the build date
of the truck is unknown, verify the 3 character "axle code" on the front
axle label in order to determine which wire harness to order. This new
actuator uses a motor to engage the front axle and is not affected by
temperature. On 1988-93 models with a GVW rating over 8500$, the new
actuator cannot be installed and the thermal actuator will remain the
    service part.

You probably have a bad encoder motor. It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black. The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Does the 4-wheel drive work ? Most of the time, it is a reminder to have your fluid changed. Other times, it could be a vacuum leak in the line that engages the 4-wheel drive. Check both of those first.

4wd not engaging no indicater lgt basicaly no 4wd

I had a prolem with my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT. The 4wd indicator light would randomly start to blink while moving and when I flipped the switch to 4wd hi or low it would engage but easily disengage and the indicator lights would not come on. I was hearing a grinding sound coming from my hubs so I replaced both front hub assemblies and the light stopped blinking and 4wd hi/low works great now. it was about 300 bucks for the hub assemblies and only took me an hour or two to change.
