Question about Audi A4

1 Answer

I need to know the correct battery replacement for a 1998 A4 switchblade key/ remote entry. A CR2032, which has been suggested DOES NOT WORK.

I've found that a CR1620 is the correct battery for the 2-button remote/switchkey provided with my car. I've installed two of these with perfect results. The procedure for "introducing" the key to the car I use is considerably easier than the one you present.
Neither 2016 nor 2025 will work since they're too large in diameter to even fit into the "compartment" for the two batteries in the remote.
There may be a different 3-button remote that was provided with some A4, but for the most often supplied 2-button remote, 2016, 2025 and 2032 will not fit.
Do I get a prize for finding the answer myself?

also u will need to reprogram the remote, here are the instructions

    1) Unlock all doors
    2) Insert a spare key in the ignition and turn to the "accessory" position
    3) Roll down driver's window
    4) While standing outside, and with all doors closed, insert main fob (with new batteries) in door then twist to lock and release, making sure to leave fob in door
    5) Reach inside and hold interior "unlock" button down for 10 seconds (this is why you keep the window open!)
    6) Press the fob's "unlock" button once - the parking lights should flash once
    7) Remove the fob and the spare key and you are done

I don't mean to confuse but there were more than one style of remote key FOB used in 1998 for the A4, the other remote uses the CR2016 as well. I think yours will be the CR2025 but keep the other number in mind, the CR2016 is thinner.

would imagine you need to change the battery in the fob, when you put the key in the car after opening its regenerating the setting in the key, but losing it overnight because of depleted battery, do not know what you have in yours but they are normally a small coin type battery like this

Remote key malfunction

Unless you've wrecked the remote by physical damage or by immersing it, likely the remote battery is dead. I have a 2005 passat and the remote takes a single cr2032 3v battery.
Gently pry the remote in half on the "non-button" side carefully with a knife or fine screwdriver to separate the key from the buttons, then the part with the bottons on it again can be carefully pried in half to expose the battery. Be careful with it - everything is plastic and a new remote is expensive.

Make sure you have inserted battery correctly in key. If it doesn't work on one side, flip it on the other. Should work..
