Why is the Check Engine Light on in my husband\'s Dodge Ram 1500? It is a steady light and he takes excellent care of this vehicle! It just came on and won\'t go out! Any suggestions? I already know that he should get help as soon as possible, but is there anything that we can do now? We need that truck! Thanks!

Re: Check Engine Light
Almost any thing will bring the light on, like if you go get fuel and fill the tank with truck runing it will turn the light on
it does not mean than it is not safe to drive but you need to go to an auto repair and have them conect the scan tool to see what code is present i will recomend to take care of it because with the light on you might notice or get a decrease in gas mileage and fuel is so expensive now
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

check all your vacuum lines. if there is a vacuum leak, the truck will
crank, but not start. if you need a vacuum diagram, go to
www.autozone.com create a profile it's free, add vehicle. put in the
info of your dodge ram. then from the main screen, where it says select a
category, select vehicle repair guide. on the next screen select
emission controls. on the next screen where it says select a chapter,
select vacuum diagrams. as you scroll down just click on the diagram for
your engine. hope it helps. good luck.
Your truck is OBD2 compliant take it to a local auto parts store and have them read the code for you they usually do this as a free service, if it doesn't have a obd2 port then your truck is not a 1996 vehicle.
All late model vehicles have built in Rev Limiters to prevent catastrophic destruction from no load over speed of the engine. Check with your dealer Service Manager to find out what RPM your engine is governed to.
Two things you want to know about the check engine light on any vehicle. One is it's an emission warning. The most common cause is a loose gas cap, make sure it clicks when you gas up. Second, is that being an emissions light, is that it'll require some test equipment to find the problem if you checked the gas cap and it's tight. You will want to do that at your friendly Dodge dealer. Why? They'll not only know what it is, it might be fixed free in the emissions warranty which has some parts that are covered longer than the vehicle's regular warranty. The shop on the corner doesn't do warranty work and they're not going to tell you if it might be covered.
Here's a link to a pdf file containing the headlight wiring diagram for your year model Dodge Ram 1500.. I can't help but notice that you say you've replaced the headlight relay? That's quite odd, because there is NO headlight relay on this vehicle- only a 40 amp fuse located in the power distribution box that sits behind the battery inside the engine bay. The switch is notorious for burning out because there is NO RELAY on this vehicle, and there is a recall (#819) but this only affects 3500 models even though the headlight wiring is the same for 1500,2500 and 3500 model Rams. Here are two more links that will help you troubleshoot your headlights problems. HereInformation on Putting a Relay in the Wiring System
have a tune up done on your vehicle. it will need plugs wires. also you may want to take your vehicle up to a auto parts store and have them connect there diagnostic machine to it and see if it pulls any codes.
