Seems your car need some attention for checking on the fuel and ignition. I would recommend a scheduled check up for the mileage clocked . Check your fuel filter, your quality of fuel possible water in tank or check the pump

Water in your fuel system ?

Drain you fuel system completely and try again.

Or you fuel is so dirty you have blocked everything up.

Drain fuel system and full service (all filters)

I WOULD START WITH ELECTRICAL AND FEUL CONNECTIONS. IF YOU HAVE A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE, CONNECT TO THE FUEL RAIL ON TOP OF THE ENGINE, LOOKS LIKE A TIREVALVE STEM SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 60PSI OR SO.

My grand cherokee runs smooth for a little while and then sputters for a while. if i step on gas a little harder and then let off, it runs smooth for a little while again. what could it be?

check idle speed settings, and idle sellenoid.
most older cars that i have seen would do this when left to idle for long periods of time.
you might check fule filter, and for impureites in fule, such as water.

Car problems

If you change your oil twice a year in that car your valves should be fine. I think it's your fuel filter. If the valves were stuck they'd get bent and you'd be smoking, the car would be knocking and it would barely start and run at all. The fuel filter is a stinky job, do it outdoors. Open your gas cap first to relieve the pressure in the tank or you'll get a little squirt of gas all over your hand. You will anyway, but it won't be so bad.

Engine doesnt like to start on a hill when low on gas.

Because you have limited gas, the small amount of gas that you have in there isnt being sent thru your fuel line because ur on a slant. Thus when your level, gas is distributed evenly in the tank and fed thru your fuel system. duh.

Check the whole fuel delivery system. Check the injectors and the fuel pump. Also check the fuel lines to make sure they arent pinched or crimped.
