2001 Mercury Sable Antifreeze leak

Pulled into the garage and switched off engine. Only then did I notice the hiss of steam from the right side of the hood. Not sure if I imagined this or not, but thought I heard a pop before a rush of liquid leaked out onto the garage floor. Lots of liquid, but none leaked until after I'd pulled into the garage (none on the road, driveway, etc.). Later, my husband found a stray rubber black bolt (hex shaped dome head) lying loose on the "a-frame". The bolt is rubber, black and about an inch or so long. It is threaded. My husband checked for antifreeze in the oil and said that looked good. Any ideas as to what happened? If the bolt was some kind of plug, then would the fact that it blew be symptomatic of some other problem, or do we just need to replace the bolt (after we figure out where the heck it goes).
Thanks for any insights.

Thanks, you're pretty close. We did fix the problem. First changed the thermostat, but that didn't do it. Then ended up replacing the entire radiator. Apparently the coils are narrow and subject to build-up/clogging. We may have prevented the problem with regular radiator flushing...the guy who fixed it for us is a trusted good friend who would never deliberately steer us wrong, so it's not like we paid for an unnecessary replacement. And all this time I though radiator flushing was a gimmick invented by quickie lube places.

Oh, and this is the funny part. The mystery "bolt" I was referring to turned out to be a fallen hood bumper. SHEESH!

2002 mercury sable overheating

Generally speaking, you can run the engine with or without the heater connected and it should make no difference in cooling the engine.
I wonder if the engine is actually running above 220 degrees.
Do you know where the steam or smoke is coming from ?
It could be a leak rather than actual overheating.

Antifreeze leaking from left side of engine on 2001 cougar 2.0 4cyl

If you can remove components that are in your line of sight to check where the leak is coming from, it would help. Sometimes leaks come from hoses or sensor housing which mount to engine block.
Prior to removing anything, may want to use de-greaser or steam clean entire engine.

Antifreeze steam comeing through vents

Your heater core has a leak, it's like a small radiator that heats up and the blower motor blows air thru it to create heat in the car. It is leaking anti freeze into the heater box.

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable 3.0. I noticed when

The clicking noise is the motor for the "blend door". The heater core and the air conditioning side share the same ducting. When you move the knob a small motor moves the door letting the respective hot or cool flow happen.
The heater core is probably blocked. The engineers at Ford have the coolant hoses bypassing the core with a WYE at the firewall. The coolant takes the path of least resistance and stops FLUSHING the heater core and it eventually clogs.

Our 1992 Mercury Sable after warming up it shuts right down. We have replaced the fuel pump and filter along with the control module and the coil is fine. We also replaced the distributor gear shaft. What...

It would appear that you've got a major vacuum leak. Listen under the hood for a loud hissing sound. Also have someone else shut down the engine while you listen, this will allow you to hear any major leak for the vacuum lasts about 2-3 seconds while the engine is slowing to a stop.Happy hunting! Mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.
