Question about 2002 Honda CR-V

Head gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now the problem I'm facing is how to set the crank shaft and the comshaft timing. I need the procedure for engine timing

Timing Chain & Gears Removal & Installation To Remove:
NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
Crankshaft set at TDC marks Head gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now - hnda_trk_crv_crank_tdc_marks.gif

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its Top Dead Center (TDC) mark (1) lines up with the pointer (2).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tires/wheels. Front undercar splash shield hnda_trk_crv_frt_under_splsh_shld.gif

  4. Remove the front undercar splash shield.
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover (See section on Valve Cover).
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (See section on Crankshaft Damper). CKP sensor and VTC solenoid electrical connectors

  8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector (1) and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector (2).
  9. Remove the VTC oil control solenoid valve (See section on VTC Solenoid Valve).
  10. Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan. Ground cable and upper bracket removal hnda_trk_crv_grnd_cbl_uppr_brckt_rem.gif

  11. Remove the ground cable (1), and remove the upper bracket (2). Side engine mount bracket removal Head gasket got bent and I have replaced it .   12. Remove the sideHead gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now - hnda_trk_crv_timng_chain_cov_rem.gifiming chain cover removal hnda_trk_crv_timng_chain_cov_rem.gif

  13. Remove the timing chain cover bolts both from the front to the block and from the bottom to the oil pan.
  14. Remove the timing chain cover.
  15. hnda_trk_crv_compr_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gifHead gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now - hnda_trk_crv_lock_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gifcrankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner. Lock the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_lock_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  16. Align the holes on the lock (1) and the auto tensionerHead gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now - hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gifmm) diameter pin (3) into the holes.
  17. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin. Removal of the timing chain auto-tensioner

  18. Remove the auto-tensioner. Removal of the timing chain guide B hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_guide.gif

  19. Remove the cam chain guide B. Removal of the timing chain gHead gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now - prev.gif hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_guidea.gif

  20. Remove the cam chain guide A (1) and tensioner arm (2).
  21. Remove the cam chain.

    To Install:

    NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.


    Crankshaft set at internal TDC marks




    Set the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) and align the TDC mark (1) on the crankshaft sprocket with the pointer (2) on the cylinder block.

    Camshafts set at internal TDC marks




    Set the camshafts to TDC with the punch mark (1) on the variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) actuator and the punch mark (2) on the exhaust camshaft sprocket should be at the top.
    Align the TDC marks (3) on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket.

    Timing chain installation on crankshaft sprocket




    Install the cam chain on the crankshaft sprocket with the colored piece (1) aligned with the punch mark (2) on the crankshaft sprocket.

    Timing chain installation on VTC and exhaust camshaft sprocket




    Install the cam chain on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket with the punch marks (1) aligned with the two colored pieces (2).

    Installation of the timing chain guide A




    Install the cam chain guide A (1) and tensioner arm (2).
    Tighten the 6 mm bolts to 8.7 ft-lb (12 Nm).
    Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 16 ft-lb (22 Nm).

    Installation of the timing chain auto-tensioner




    Install the auto-tensioner and tighten the bolts to 8.7 ft-lb (12 Nm).

    Installation of the timing chain guide B




    Install the cam chain guide B and tighten the bolts to 16 ft-lb (22 Nm).
    Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
    Check the chain case oil seal for damage.
    If the oil seal is damaged, replace the chain case oil seal.
    Remove old liquid gasket from the chain case mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
    Clean and dry the chain case mating surfaces.

    Gasket sealer to timing cover block area




    Apply liquid gasket compound, evenly to the cylinder block mating surface of the chain case and to the inner threads of the holes.
    Apply liquid gasket to the cylinder block upper surface contact areas (1) on the chain case.

    Gasket sealer to timing cover oil pan area




    Apply liquid gasket compound, evenly to the oil pan mating surface of the chain cover and to the inner threads of the holes.
    NOTE: Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing old residue.


    Timing chain cover installation




    Install the new O-ring (1) on the chain case.
    Set the edge of the chain case (2) to the edge of the oil pan (3), and then install the chain case on the cylinder block (4).
    NOTE: When installing the chain case, do not slide the bottom surface on the oil pan mounting surface.

    Install the timing chain cover bolts in both the block and the oil pan and tighten all the timing chain cover bolts to 8.7 ft-lb (12 Nm).
    Install the side engine mount bracket and tighten the bolts to 33 ft-lb (44 Nm).

    Ground cable and upper bracket installation




    Install the upper bracket (1), and then tighten the bolt/nuts in the numbered sequence shown.
    Tighten the bolts/nuts to 40 ft-lb (54 Nm).
    Install the ground cable (2) and tighten the bolt to 8.7 ft-lb (12 Nm).
    Install the Variable valve timing control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve (See section on VTC Solenoid Valve).
    Connect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector and VTC oil control solenoid valve connector.
    Install the crankshaft pulley (See section on Crankshaft Damper).
    Install the cylinder head cover (See section on Valve Cover).
    Install the drive belt.
    Install the front undercar splash shield.
    Install the front wheels and tires.
    Tighten the wheel lug nuts in a criss-cross pattern to 80 ft-lb (108 Nm).
    Lower the vehicle.
    Start the engine and check for leaks.
    Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs.

It is common for people to refit the head and cam shaft/s then attempt to turn the cam shaft or crank to get the valve timing right not realising that that causes valves to be bent

the camshaft keys should be positioned downwards at 90 degrees to the head surface(Gasket surface) This will place the timing marks on the sprocket in the 1o'clock position upwards. The black link on the chain will be aligned with the 2 dots on the sprocket. This applies to both heads. the crankshaft sprocket will be facing down and the black link will be on the single dot. The crankshaft keyway will be located at approx. the 11 o'clock position.

If this sounds a bit daunting then get a workshop manual as it explains the process well. The book says not to turn the camshafts /crankshaft with the chains removed and I suspect that if this is not adhered to then bent valves will result.

While replacing timing belt on my 2003 pt cruiser (2.4 liter) I got the belt on with the crank pulley and compression pulley (top front) in timing but exhaust pulley (top rear) off by one tooth. Took belt...


To readjust the cam timing loosen of the valve rockers so that the valves will not move as the cams are turned.. Set the crankshaft on TDC no 1 piston. This will make the mark on the crank sprocket line up with a mark on the housing. The cam shaft marks are to ne facing each other with the "up" marks facing up. Loosen of the adjuster idler and use an allen key to lever the pulley away from the belt. Fit belt and let tensioner off Ensure tensioner spring is in line with the notch. Repeat procedure to get it there.. The valves will now be timed . replace the rockers and adjust as required . The problem that you had is that there was load on the cam lobes from incorrect positioning of the cam shafts and the shaft turns until the load was equal between two lobes.. There is every possibility that there will be bent valves as it is an interference motor.

you are in a bit of a bind. Turning the engine over will result in bent valves so do not touch the crank shaft. you have to loose off all the rockers/ cam followers even to the point of removing the cam shaft. having done that remove no1 cylinder spark plug and by the use of a thin piece of wire turn the crank until the piston reaches top dead center. find this by rocking the crank back and forward until the piston dose'n move up or down check for the crank timing mark next replace the cam shaft and position the cam lobes for no1 piston in such a position that the inlet and exhaust valves move slightly up or down when the cam is moved slightly left or right. this is called valve over lap and with the piston on top dead center means that you now have valve timing for the engine. Cam timing marks can be dot on gear to shiny link on chain or if using a belt a dot on tooth lineing up with mould mark or join on head before starting up do a compression check to prove that there are no bent valves. if you are not mechanically minded enough to attempt the valve timing method it may be cheaper in the long term to let a qualified person do the job

I have a blown head gasket will it cost me at least $1000


It may cost you $500 to $800, depending where and how your car has to be fixed.
Replacing a cylinder head gasket is a miss or a hit. In some cases, just replacing the gasket may work. But if the cylinder head is bent, dealer may ask to replace it, because "machined aluminum heads rarely works". In this case the cost may be more than $1000. It is a good idea to send the cylinder head for inspection, in a machine shop. They charge $150 for inspecting, checking, cleaning and if necessary machining the head.
If the timing belt will be replaced this is an extra cost. If someone will just replace the gasket, on a bent cylinder head, it is more likely to blow out again. This problem can be solved if the gasket be replaced properly, checking and taking care for the cylinder head too. I can't do it from the internet. If you decide to do it by yourself, or by someone who can help you, then Haynes Repair Manual on line for $20 is a must, and some tools for $100.
With help you can do it during a week end. One day to dismantle, and another day to put things back. Be patient and pay attention to details.
Everything is in the manual. If you will replace the timing belt too, and i encourage you to do it, there is only one thing missing in the manual, and i will tell you.
To put on the timing belt, align marks, mount first the belt around the crank pulley, and after to the overhead cam. Rotate fully the belt two times (drive selector in NEUTRAL), and check the timing marks. You will be one tooth off. The reason is the belt tensioner. Remove the belt, move the off timing pulley one tooth in opposite direction and install the belt. You have to repeat this procedure till after two full rotation of the belt, the MARKS ALIGN. Good Luck.

Had a cambelt break on a 2003 renault scenic 1.6 16v, replaced valves and head gasket, just need to fit timing belt but having trouble with the cam timing, crank shaft locking tool is fitted...


Its because your pistons on 1&4 are up top that is why your bent valves got bent you are doing exactly the same thing so turn the crank back 15degrees position your cam and reset your crank,it seems to me you may be out of your depth lets hope not or it may be expensive

Timing belt replacement on a 1999 isuzu rodeo 2.2


When you replaced the cylinder head, it would have been absolutely critical that the camshaft was already in the right position before you bolted it down. You cannot just bolt the head on and then turn things to line up the cam timing marks or you will bend valves while doing so. If this is what happened, the engine will not start and the head will have to come back off so that you can replace the bent valves.
