I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am. I drove it to work. Went to start it for lunch and it wouldn't start. It cranks like it's trying to start but won't.

Check fuel pressure and volume. You will need a fuel guage for this. The schrader valve is where you check it, which is on the fuel rail under the hood near the injectors. Check for spark at the wire with a spark plug checker.

If improper pressure for fuel then suspect pump or relay, more likely the pump.
If no spark suspect fuse, coil, crank sensor, or ignition control module, or ignition switch.

Cranking and starting are two different issues.
If the engine does not crank, you need to check the starter to see if it has power. The problem could be the starter, key switch, or neutral safety switch.
If the engine cranks but does not start, then you would check for spark and fuel pressure.

Starter solenoid or just a starter bad, sometimes this comes out of nowhere but usually you can hear it start cranking slow shortly before failure.

agree that starter is bad. to know if timing belt is starting to get bad is just look at the belt. if it is getting bad, there will be small cracks on the inside of the belt.

your vat sensor sounds bad.(this is where the chip in the key is not recognized by the vat sensor, and will(in some cases) cause this problemVAT(vehicle anti-theft) module can be replace or it could be your ecm(computer); butit sounds like the VAT sensor problem. The good old days and these sensors wouldn't exist. insert key;start car. Good Luck.
