Three things affect the engine, electrical, gas, oxygen.

Did you gap your plugs? This means that the plugs need to have a specific space on the top for your engine.

Are all plugs firing, the backfire means that your car is not consuming all of the fuel injected and is igniting in the tailpipe.

Also the air filter may not be allowing the air mixture and causing (part or all) the engine to burn too lean.

That is a start.

good luck and don't forget to vote!!!

For a proper diagnosis and repair you first need to scan your engine control module to find out why it turned on the Check Engine light.

@002 Protge 5. Very low idle and kinda dies out when driving. Put new plugs in it and still the same? Sometimes stalls at stop lights?

REmove the idle control valve, clean and replace. Check plug wires, check fuel filter and fuel injectors.

try buying new points (yes there called points) gap them then install them, they go under the distributor cap, by the condenser, also, the sparkplug wires go in a certin order so if your not sure call an michanics shop and tell them what kind of car you have and they'll tell you what order they should go in. also did you gap the spark plugs??

2003 Mazda Protege car is shaking When Drive and Engine light stay On

I bet it also feels like it wants to stall as well. I think my car was at around 65k and it did the same. It is the spark plugs and the coil. My mistake was going to the dealership where they charge you too much. Any experienced mechanic can do it. Changing the coil is also in the manual.
