Orange motor symbol in dash of 1997 cavalier

Your car has somewhere a computer.
Nowadays most of the electronic circuitry goes "through" that computer.
Whenever the light comes on and stays on after starting the engine, there is a problem somewhere.
Here locally there are car parts stores, with hand held "computer testers".
These stores can test your computer for free and determine some of the reasons that light stays on.
You can also buy a "computer tester" of your very own if you wish. Prices around here run from 30 to 150 dollars, and include a book either on what is wrong by the code which reads on the display of the tester, or at least will tell you how to hook it up.
Usually there is a plug hanging under the dash, where you are not supposed to see it, that the store will use to plug in the tester.
The "check engine" light can actually tell you there may be several dozen problems, or maybe even more!
Some of these problems will affect the operation of your car, some will not.
A few of the you can fix yourself, most require a shop to fix.
If your area or state has vehicle inspections, your vehicle probably will not pass an inspection with the light on.

1998 toyota camery le engine light on misses when i give it gas

The engine light is on because the car is telling you that something is wrong. It is putting out codes and you need a diagnostic tool to check for the solution.

2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder - My service engine soon light just came on (again). I've recently replaced the gas cap and the light stayed off for 2 weeks. What other problems would cause the light to...

You first have to find out what the OBD II codes are by using a OBD II hand held machine that goes through the codes and lets you know what is coming up. There are like over 20 or more things why the engine light came on so please use the OBD II code sensor hand held device which will tell you off the bat the answer to why the engine light came on. You can go to advance auto parts and have them check that out for you at no cost.

I have check engine light, 4wheel drive light, and vsc light.

Check engine is a generic "alarm" light. To read, a OBD II hand held computer has to be used.

1) take to mechanic
2) find oil change place that will read it for free
3) buy ODB II for about $100 at autoparts store (also Harbor Freight)

My car wont start but the battery is not dead. my check engine light is on. can i get a code for the check engine light myself or do i have to take it to a computer to read it

This model will have to have the diagnostic computer hooked to it. You can purchase one at your local parts house and have for future use, they usually run between $90-$200 depending on how good of one you get but a basic one is all you need. You can get the code without moving the vehicle and call some parts houses and they can tell you what it means, but the scanner will give you a basic definition of the code to give you idea of where to start.

94 camry engine light on, code 71, how do i fix it

Go to Autozone and have your current EGR Valve, removed from the car, tested and they will determine if it is defective. They tested 2 for me, and neither was a replace, just a clean and they worked great. If they don't have a brand that suits your wants, just test it, then buy the new somewhere else, no commitment to buy.
The most common problem with these EGR valves is they get plugged up from carbon build up. Best way to test it is with a little hand held vacuum pump. Hook it up to the EGR valve and with the engine running at idle and squeeze the vacc pump handle a couple times to open the EGR valve. That should kill the engine. If it dosent, the EGR valve is probably plugged up. At that point you'll have to take it off and clean the carbon out. Even if you have your mechanic check into it, it shouldnt be that expensive to remove it and clean it out or replace it.

Good Luck and hope this helps: Oh and I think theres two EGR.. check the one on the bottom of the engine to. I am not sure but i think there are two EGR valves on your camery.

Does the 2000 accent have a self diagnose facility? (like the toyota camerys of a few years ago?) How do I activate it and what are the codes?

All cars built after 1996 sold in the USA have to have OBDII diagnostics. You don't need to activate anything. To read the code, you can 1. buy a scan tool 2. Pay a garage to diagnose the code 3. Go to your local autoparts chain and they will read the codes for free. Call first.
You may not have a code if your trouble light or check engine light is not on.

Is it new or rebuilt? There is a big difference. Also a starter is not supposed to click.

Have you confirmed the connections in both the starting and charging circuits?
