Question about 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

1 Answer

My problem is when I turn on the headlights, the parking lights comes but not the headlights, but when I hold the turn signal switch / highbeam to the rear the driving lights comes on but I will have to hold it in place to rear without clicking over to the highbeams for the lights to stay on. When I releases the turn signal the lights goes off. What causes this or is the turnsignal switch bad ?

You might just have two bad low beam headlights, I have seen it before. Only other problem would be the switch that turns on the headlights is bad. Best way is to Test power going into the headlight when the low beams are turned on to rule out the switch.

The problem is most likely your cars multi function switch. That is the switch that controls your blinkers, dimmer, and everything else. If you change the switch that should solve your problem.

first of all i would check the fuses for the head lights. if they are good i would ask is the switch for the head lights on the turn signal? if so, your turn signal switch is most likely the cause of the problem. if the light switch is separate from the turn signal you most likely have a head light switch that is not operating properly.

What you need to do is remove the head lamp switch and check for power on the red wire terminal c with a test light. You should have power. If you do then check the yellow wire terminal d and see if you have power when you turn the switch to low beams. The red is power coming in and the yellow is power going out.If you have power going in but not out when you turn the lights on then your switch is bad.replace it.If you don`t have power going in then you need to check for an open circuit in the red wire.Hope this helps.Let me know if you need more help.Good luck.

If your high beams come on only when you hold the lever, and you have no headlights otherwise, i would suggest it has to be the dimmer switch that is faulty. First, though, use a test light to see if you have power to the low beams. Just pull the bulb out, and test in the socket. If you have power there, the problem is just the bulbs. No... they didn't both burn out at once, but you don't notice until they are both gone. You meet cars all the time with one headlight. When the second one goes, they over think the problem.
The fact that your dimmer switch has to be held to get any headlights would lead me to believe it's the dimmer switch that is faulty.

Sounds like your switch is bad (i.e. turn signal / healight dimmer / winshield lever switch) inside the steering column. Replace as necessary.

Headlights and highbeams switches

After reading your post, I am pretty sure the headlight switch is at fault. What happens when you turn the headlight switch to on and then actuate the high beam switch? If both low and high elements light up, I think that would be the headlight switch itself as the culprit. I don't have access to the wiring diagram you need, as that would answer your question end the guesswork on my part.
