i have a 1996 jaguar xj6. while driving it this morning a warning chime sounded and the car shut down about a mile from the house. when i pulled over the car would not restart. all of the instrument lights and gages were off however the other electrical things worked ie power seats windows etc. when turning the ignition to start there was nothing. after checking all the fuses i left the key in the ignition and suddenly the instrument panel turned and i could start the car. i was able to drive the car home however it will not start again.

Hi,
Could you tell me if this problem only happens when you are stationary or while the vehicle is moving?

Thanks

Jason

    Ok
One of the main problems that cause this is a communication fault with the computer system and the dash system.
This can be one of 3 things.
    1. A connection fault in the dash
    2. A connection fault from the ECM
    3. A comm bus fault with a sensor.

You need to get a Fault Code tool to check this, it is the only way that you will be able to get this fault sorted unfortunatly.

There is no way you can fix this at home, the diagnosis of a problem like this requires the electronic systems control modules be scanned using special Jaguar test equipment for fault codes, guessing is not an option, the control systems of the car are just to complex, so the dealer is your next stop. My experience is 35 years as a Factor certified Master automotive electronic control system specialist, my advice is based on this experience and training.

Hello again, I think u know my advice is correct, u neither have the testing tools or the training to do the testing required to repair this, so if u want to drive this car anytime soon take my advice and see the Jag dealer service dept. Good Luck

The best thing to do in this situation is drive it to your local auto parts store and borrow (for free) there OBD II scan tool. This tool hooks up underneath the drivers side steering wheel and will obtain the trouble codes stored inside your Jaguar's computer. After you obtain the codes, look in the back of a Haynes repair book (also at the auto parts store for free) and match the codes you received to the codes found in the back of the book. This will save you time and money and eliminate the guess work out of your repair.

From what you describe it appears that you have a bad contact in the wiring: when the wire heats up it simply disconnects.
The key switch has 4 contacts: for permanently powered items like the radio, for the interior and lights, for the engine's ECM and the instrument panel and finally the starter. Since the problem is only to those that are powered from a single contact then the problem is either in the key switch or in the wiring immediately after it - between the key switch and the fuse box.
You will have to take out the steering column covers and test the wiring to the key switch - if you have any doubts replace it, it can't be fixed.

Have you checked the key switch with a voltmeter already?

Transmission went out

This is internal gear separation. this can happen when the transmission is either old or, hasn't been serviced in a while. the gear ratio can become unstable during long term driving and, if not serviced properly, it will fail. this type of high efficiency trany can be quite fragile considering the age of this motor vehicle. i suspect many seal issues as well. i would rebuild as soon as possible.

Remote locking on 1996 jaguar xj6

it sounds like the module to the alarm in the car is going bad. the sensor that detects for jags is the tied into the dash speedometer so this will need to be swapped out by the dealer only. the module will also need reprogrammed and rechecked after the reprogramming.
