Hi. The turbo models is set that wen you put your camshafts an verything in then you must look at the left hand end of the cam shaft you must look at the volvo tool 5452 then you will see there is a slot on back of each cam both the cams must be paralel to the center line but also noting that 1 half above the slot is sligtly off set you must rotate the cams so that the intake cam slot is above the center line and the exhaust bolw the sentre then you fit the volvo tool or your own modified 1 then tighten the sprocets on their marks put your cambelt on and then tour done.

I need cam timing settings for a volvo s40 2006

The timing marks on the cam gears align with the timing marks in the rear timing cover. The timing mark on the crank gear aligns with the timing mark on the oil pump assembly.
The tensioner is set by rotating the tensioner clockwise until the holes in the tabs on the left side of the tensioner are aligned, then tighten the center bolt.

Not sure if it is possible to have it run smoothly by being off a tooth.

The hash marks on the cam pulleys line up with the timing belt cover that goes over those pulleys. Should be two notches in the cover.

As for the lower marks...those aren't really visible till the lower aux. belt pulley is removed. Then you'll have a clear view of the line up marks. One on the inside and one on the outter area of the pulley itself.

When you put the t-belt on...it is a good idea to replace the tensioner as well.

Also when you have the new belt on...adjust the tensioner so that the handle looking thing is centered between the two notches that hold the tensioner in place to the block.

After putting all that together, its a good idea to rotate the timing belt two to four rotations till the marks all line up again. That will let you know if you are hitting the valves or not.

I hope you've solved the problem by now, but there are alignment marks on the crank shaft (top pulley), idler (lower side), and cam shaft (smaller, bottom pulley) which should be aligned with stationary marks on the timing belt rear cover.

The belt has marks that align with the aforementioned marks (lines). The double marks on the belt align with the camshaft marks and the single marks with the others.

Loosen the tensioner clamp (nut) to allow the spring loaded tensioner to press on the belt and retighten the nut.

Rotate the crank shaft (clockwise, probably two revolutions) and make sure the pulley marks realign to the marks on the cover (they don't have to realign with the marks on the belt).

Rotate the crank shaft a full revolution once the belt is on and check that alignment is preserved.

Periodically loosen and retension the tensioner nut (access through a hole in the cover) to ensure that tension is maintained as the belt relaxes.
