I have a 2002 isuzu rodeo 3.1 liter v6 and I try to start it and it tries to start but turns off. I also don't hear the fuel pump turn on every time I turn my key. Could it be just the fuel filter or is it...

It could be either one, if the fuel pressure is too low.
Try this, as a rough test of fuel pressure. On the engine on the fuel rail is a test port to connect a fuel pressure gauge. It looks like a tire valve, may have a cap on it that unscrews. Follow your fuel lines to the top of the engine-they will connect to the fuel rail -where the injectors are. If you find the test port, use a small screwdriver or little punch type of thing: be careful of gas spraying out, don't hold your head over the test port: you want to press in the center little valve and see if gas spurts up out of the valve, with the ignition key in on, not start. If gas spurts up, you know the pump is working well enough to get gas up to the engine. The fuel pressure on multi port injection is quite high, about 50 psi. You would need to check what Isuzu calls for. It really would be best to rent a fuel pressure tester, if possible, and connect it at that test port, turn the key to on, and see what pressure you have. If the pressure is as called for, then you know the pump and filter is okay, and can look elsewhere for the problem.
"...tries to start, but turns off..." you mean it does fire and try to run for a second? That does sound like it may be a fuel problem.

Diagram fuel pump and gauges don't work

Try crankshaft positioner. It needs to accurately report rpm to the ecm to kick up fuel pressure. Check Inertia switch for fuel cutoff and reset.

Is there anyone that knows where the fuel pressure release valve is on a 2001 Dodge intripid

are you trying to test fuel pressure or are you trying to relieve pressure to change fuel filter to test is on top the engine on the fuel rail you can also hook up a fuel pressure gauge here it looks like the valve on your rims for air in your tires if your doing it to replace fuel filter pull two fuses fuel pump and relay fuses

Hello,
There are several causes that might lead to such a problem.

A dead fuel pump (could be the pump, pump relay or wiring circuit);A plugged fuel filter;Low fuel pressure (weak pump or restricted line); or No pulse signal to injectors (bad injector relay or PCM driver circuit).

One of the first things to check is the fuel pump. Then you carry out these tests,

Run a test on this components and you should be able to detect where the problem is from.
Static Fuel Pressure Test, Residual Fuel Pressure Test, Running Fuel Pressure Test, Dead Head Pressure, Fuel Volume Test, Fuel Pressure Regulator Test, Fuel Pressure Drop Test, Scope Tests.
After carrying out these tests, you will be able to tell what component is faulty and how to solve the problem.
Take care and good luck

A new fuel filter would be a good first try, if it does not help do a fuel pressure test or have your mechanic do a fuel pressure test. If the fuel pressure is low the fuel pump is defective and needs to be replaced. If the fuel pressure tests okay it is also a possibility that the timing is off though that is not as likely.

Car wont start. Has spark, tried Carb Cleaner.

You may be weak on fuel pressure . even a couple of lbs low on a cold start will cause a no start.
Double check cold start cranking fuel pressure. If under 63-62 lbs you have problems.
one test is to give it a squirt of carb cleaner not starting fluid. If it starts then you have a fuel pressure problem.
Run the full fuel pressure test and post back pressures.
Here is the guide lines on testing.
Hard to start cold.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak.

The 75-85 is only a check on the capable full pressure of fuel pump.
If you can not find the rubber return line check full pressure by plugging return line or just or the true full pressure can be taken direct at the end fuel filter.
What are the pressure readings that you have done.
What are your cold start pressure readings?
Post back what you have. Good Luck
