It may be anything,a bad fuel pump, fuel filter, bad injectors, or electrical problem. It is a good idea to narrow the problem. First check if have a spark at spark plugs. After check the fuel pump. You can hear the noise if the ignition key is turned ON, but do not crank the starter. You can check the injectors with a needle stethoscope, if they work they click like a swiss watch. If it is the electrical problem most likely for this kind of cars a replacement of distributor cap and rotor, can cure the problem. I hope the spark plugs and spark plug wires has been changed already. Soon you have to replace the timing chain too. The most important thing to do is to narrow the area of troubleshooting. This can be done by excluding things that are O.K.

Getting very hard to start

Sounds like a timing issue with the symptoms you gave. Have it checked by a good mechanic with good knowledge of your make. Also some of the after market programmers can create major concerns. Try returning everything to factory settings and see if all issues dissappear before going to a mechanic.

2002 Ram2500. started hard and ran hard till the engine evened out, then ran smooth. after turning off, would not start. seems like no power . motor turns with starter, but does not fire. why?

Check to see if you have fuel pressure (valve on the fuel rail looks like an over sized tire valve) press the center of the valve but stay clear it should spray fuel. If not change the fuel relay if that don't work its a bad fuel pump. If you do have fuel then its probably a bad ignition control box.

68 302 engine with a elect point conversion kit, engine when hot after shut off for about hour hard starting . have to pump gas befor it catches. it will start right away when hot if you restart it as...

What you describe sounds like the fuel in the bowl of the carb is evaporating. A thing to check if you are able is the fuel pump. A pressure test on the fuel pump will determine if the diaphragm in the pump is able to hold pressure after the 302 is shut off. A hot carb will evaporate some fuel in the bowl after shutdown. the pressure of a good fuel pump will add fuel as necessary.
If the carb bowl is empty when trying to start it will take a few turns of the engine a a couple pumps of the gas pedal to get gas to the engine.
This is just a suggestion to try. Sort of test before you buy kind of thing.
Good luck and great engine.

I have a 1989 Ford Tempo. It hasn't been started for about a year now when I went to start it today it would begin to start and then fail. I checked the fuel filter and it seemed to be fine. Any ideas??

If it has not been started in a year, you might want to either drain the old gas out (because gas can go bad) and put fresh gas in and try again, or go to an auto parts store and pick up some fuel treatment/restoration. The treatment will NOT be a permanent fix,but should allow the car to start. Now the bad news. It could be the fuel pump, whci is a hard thing to change. To know for certain if it is the fuel pump, here's what you do:
Get in like you are going to start the car, but leave the driver door open, there needs to be silence.
Turn the key to just before the engine would start (the radio comes on and the AC starts blowing, but the engine is off)
Listen carefully, if the fuel pump is working properly, you should hear a hum coming from the back end of the car by the fuel tank. If you hear this hum, that means that the pump was turned on and primed. If you do not hear the hum, chances are that the fuel pump is shot.

I would recommend changing the gas first before you try to start it again, because if the fuel pump is good and the gas is bad, that bad gas is being shot into your engine.

I hope this helps. good luck

Will not start. have ignition but will not start

if it seems to be getting fuel let it set for a few minute, turn on the key without cranking the engine, then crank engine do not step on the gas pedal. if it still doesn't start check your fuse. if the fuse is good, then your problem might start to get a little expensive.
