i had the same problem. After checking the window motor was not the problem i then checked the wiring harnes in the door. I beeped out all the connectors to make sure there were no broken wires and cleaned up all the contacts. The main connector looked quite corroded. I sprayed all the connectors with rust check and reassembled. The window is working fine now

Part number on my vw mk3 1996 is for a pipe from the crankcase pressure valve, 037 103 493 AK hose/pipe £13.69 plus at vw garage, 10 mins to fit, the pipe had worn holes in the corners, car runs fine now no cutting out at junctions or roundabouts.

Take the head to an engineering shop so they can pressure test it to see if its cracked or bent. If its bent / twisted slightly they can skim it, if its cracked they might be able to weld it otherwise you need a new head.
