I'm replacing the serpentine belt on a 2001 cherokee sport 4.0 and the belt tension adjustor does not seem to be loosening the pulley. got the old belt off, but cannot get the new belt back on.

Tension is maintained using an automatic tensioner pulley assembly. The drive belt is tensioned by adjusting the position of the idler pulley, accomplished by moving the adjuster bolt on the idler mechanism.

Serpentine Belt Because serpentine belts use a spring loaded tensioner for adjustment, belt replacement tends to be somewhat easier than it used to be on engines where accessories were pivoted and bolted in place for tension adjustment. Basically, all belt replacement involves is to pivot the tensioner to loosen the belt, then slide the belt off of the pulleys. The two most important points are to pay CLOSE attention to the proper belt routing (since serpentine belts tend to be "snaked'' all different ways through the pulleys) and to make sure the V-ribs are properly seated in all the pulleys.
Although belt routing diagrams have been included in this section, the first places you should check for proper belt routing are the labels in your engine compartment. These should include a belt routing diagram which may reflect changes made during a production run.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. This will help assure that no one mistakenly cranks the engine over with your hands between the pulleys, and that the cooling fan cannot activate while servicing the belt(s). NOTE Take a good look at the installed belt and make a note of the routing. Before removing the belt, make sure the routing matches that of the belt routing diagram. If for some reason a diagram does not match (you may not have the original engine or it may have been modified), carefully note the changes on a piece of paper.
  2. For tensioners equipped with a 1/2 in. (13mm) square hole, insert the drive end of a large breaker bar into the hole. Use the breaker bar to pivot the tensioner away from the drive belt. For tensioners not equipped with this hole, use the proper-sized socket and breaker bar (or a large handled wrench) on the tensioner idler pulley center bolt to pivot the tensioner away from the belt. This will loosen the belt sufficiently that it can be pulled off of one or more of the pulleys. It is usually easiest to carefully pull the belt out from underneath the tensioner pulley itself.
  3. Once the belt is off one of the pulleys, gently pivot the tensioner back into position. DO NOT allow the tensioner to snap back, as this could damage the tensioner's internal parts.
  4. Now finish removing the belt from the other pulleys and remove it from the engine.
To install:
  1. While referring to the proper routing diagram (which you identified earlier), begin to route the belt over the pulleys, leaving whichever pulley you first released it from for last.
  2. Once the belt is mostly in place, carefully pivot the tensioner and position the belt over the final pulley. As you begin to allow the tensioner back into contact with the belt, run your hand around the pulleys and make sure the belt is properly seated in the ribs. If not, release the tension and seat the belt.
  3. Once the belt is installed, take another look at all the pulleys to double check your installation.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable, then start and run the engine to check belt operation.
  5. Once the engine has reached normal operating temperature, turn the ignition OFF and check that the belt tensioner arrow is within the proper adjustment range.

  1. Removing the Serpentine Belt
    • 1 Park your Subaru on a level surface and open the hood.
    • 2 Disconnect the ground (black) battery cable using a wrench. This will prevent the cooling fan from activating.
    • 3 Locate the serpentine belt routing diagram in your engine compartment and compare it to the actual routing of the installed belt. Make sure the routing on the label matches the actual routing. If they do not match or there is no label, note the actual routing on a piece of paper for later reference.
    • 4 Locate the belt tensioner pulley on your Subaru model. If the tensioner is equipped with a squared hole, use a large breaker bar with a 1/2-inch (13 mm) drive. Otherwise, use a ratchet and socket of the proper size on the tensioner pulley center bolt.
    • 5 Rotate the tensioner pulley away from the belt to release the belt tension.
    • 6 Pull the belt off of one of the pulleys and slowly release the tensioner pulley back into position. Do not let the tensioner pulley snap back or you may damage an internal component.
    • 7 Finish removing the serpentine belt from the rest of the pulleys and the engine compartment.
    Installing the New Serpentine Belt
    • 1 Match the old belt to the new one and make sure they are of the same length and configuration. It is normal for the new belt to be slightly shorter since the old one has been stretched through use.
    • 2 Route the new serpentine belt through all of the pulleys except the tensioner pulley. Use the diagram on the engine compartment or your notes, as a reference, to properly route the belt.
    • 3 Insert the large breaker bar into the square hole or the ratchet and socket into the tensioner pulley center bolt.
    • 4 Rotate the tensioner pulley in the same direction you did to release the belt tension.
    • 5 Slide the serpentine belt onto the tensioner pulley.
    • 6 Release the tensioner pulley back into position.
    • 7 Look at all the pulleys and make sure the serpentine belt is properly seated on each one. Otherwise, release the belt tension and adjust the belt.
    • 8 Connect the ground (black) battery cable using the wrench.

Serpentine belt diagram for a 2003 Chevy unpalatable 4.3


Pop the hood of the car and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram. The diagram on the 2003 Chevrolet Impala is on top of the fan shroud. The diagram will be a picture of all of the accessory pulleys and how the serpentine belt is routed among the pulleys. This diagram will give you the exact direction for routing the new belt onto the pulleys. If you cannot find a serpentine belt routing diagram, take a notepad and pen and draw out the exact routing diagram of the old belt across the pulleys.

  • 2 Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. It is located below the alternator on the left front side of the engine. The tensioner on the 3.4 liter, 3.5 liter and the 3.9 liter engines will require a 3/8 ratchet to release the belt tensioner. The 3.8 liter engine will require a ratchet and a 15 mm socket for the belt tensioner. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise to loosen and remove the belt from the belt tensioner pulley.
  • 3 Slide the old belt from the belt tensioner pulley. Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and pull the belt from the engine compartment.
  • 4 Route the new belt across the crankshaft pulley first. The crankshaft pulley is the big pulley on the bottom of the engine in the center. Then route the serpentine belt across the remaining pulleys as directed by the serpentine belt routing diagram. Leave the belt tensioner pulley for last.
  • 5 Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise again to relieve the tension and slide the new belt across the top of the belt tensioner pulley. Release the belt tensioner and the belt will tighten up as the tensioner applies pressure to the belt. Make sure the new belt is properly seated in all the pulleys.
  • 6 Crank the engine and inspect the belt again to make sure that it stays seated in the pulleys.

    Locate the belt-routing diagram, printed on the fan shroud or possibly applied to the underside of the hood. This diagram shows you how to properly route the new belt, as well as identifying the location of the various pulleys, including the serpentine belt tensioner.

    Move the belt tensioner off the Sable's belt using the serpentine belt tool. The tool connects to the side of the tensioner's arm and essentially acts as a handle for use in moving the tensioner. You can purchase a serpentine belt tool at most auto-part retailers.

    Slip the belt away from the tensioner with your free hand and release the pressure on the tensioner with the tool. Pull the belt off the rest of the pulleys by hand and then remove it from the engine well.

    Grab the old belt and new belt with one hand and put your foot through the other end of the belts. Stretch them both to their full length and check to ensure their both the same size. The old belt may have up to one-inch of extra length due to normal stretching that occurs during the belt's service life.

    Wind the new belt, rib side to the pulley, around the crankshaft pulley. Consult the routing diagram and route the belt to the next pulley on the diagram. Continue to route and then check the diagram until you have the belt wound around every pulley except the belt tensioner pulley.

    Double check to make sure the belt routes exactly as shown on the diagram and then move the tensioner aside once more so you can route the belt over the tensioner pulley as shown in the diagram. Move the tensioner back into place slowly and remove the tool.

    How do you replace serpentine belt?


    Hi,
    This is a simple technical task,just ensure you follow the instructions below carefully;

    STEP 1 Open the hood and locate the accessory belt diagram, which shows the routing of the belt in the engine.

    STEP 2. Turn the tensioner pulley to the right by placing a 15-mm wrench on the bolt in the middle of the tensioner and rotating the entire pulley. The tensioner pulley is located in the middle of the power steering pump and the crankshaft, and across from the water pump.


    STEP 3 Pull the belt off one of the pulleys and slowly rotate the tensioner back into its original position.

    NOTE;The tensioner pulley is spring loaded. If it snaps back into place, you stand the risk damaging the pulley.

    STEP 4 Remove the old belt from the other pulleys and discard it.


    STEP 5 Carefully Wrap the replacement serpentine belt around all but one of the pulleys using the belt diagram as a guide. Choose a pulley that is easy to access, i will suggest the power steering or tensioner pulley.

    STEP 6 Hold the belt tight and rotate the tensioner pulley to the right.



    STEP 7 Gently Slide the belt around the open pulley and move the tensioner pulley back into position.

    FINAL STEP Ensure that the belt is properly wrapped around all of the pulleys. The belt sits in the middle of the groove of the pulley when properly installed.

    How do i release the tension belt ... cant seem to find bolt being referred to in other docs


    Here's the procedure on how to release and replace the tension belt of your car.

    Step 1
  • Open the hood on the Volvo S-60 and find the serpentine-belt routing diagram. The diagram should be attached to the top of the fan shroud that covers the radiator. If not, draw out the exact routing method of the serpentine belt around each pulley with a pen and a piece of paper.
  • Step 2 Locate the serpentine-belt tensioner that is in the very center of the engine. The tensioner will have a square bolt head in the center of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 3 Slide the open end of the 5/8-wrench onto the square bolt head in the center of the belt-tensioner pulley. Turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise and slide the serpentine belt off of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 4 Remove the serpentine belt from the other pulleys and pull the belt out of the engine compartment.
  • Step 5 Slide the new serpentine belt into the engine compartment and around the crankshaft pulley.
  • Step 6 Route the new serpentine belt around each pulley. Turn the belt-tensioner pulley counterclockwise again and slide the serpentine belt around the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner and it will tighten the belt around the pulleys. Look over the belt to ensure that it is inside of each pulley.
  • Step 7 Crank the S-60 and look over the serpentine belt with the motor running. Let the engine run for about one minute and shut the engine off. Close the hood.

    If your idler pulley is bad then unbolt it and while you're at it replace the power steering belt.

    Need to know the routing for the pulleys on a 2001 chevy cavalier 2.2 liter engine serpentine belt. I already have the belt and I'm working on putting it on now, but I really need instructions or a diagram...

    Serpentine belt


    there will be a diagram of the routing of the belt on the bottom side of the hood. You need to specify what engine you have also. One common thing is the tension pulley, you will need to pry on it to relieve tension in order to put the belt on. Make sure you save the alternator for last as you can get to it a lot easier that the rest.
