Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

I have a '97 Grand Cherokee which would not shift into 2nd gear. Thought it was the ECU. Got a remanufactured ECU from Auto Computer Exchange. Changed the ECU and the Jeep drove perfectly. After one day of sitting I got in it and now ot will not shift into 2nd gaer again! I understand that this transmission R42E does not have a TCM and the ECU controls the shifting. PLEASE HELP!

Needs Governor Pressure Solenoid & governor pressure sensor replaced. When you remove the tranny pan you will see these parts. It will fix it every time on 42RE 46RE tranny. If thtere is a lot of metal piled up on the bottom of the pan don't bother then you need a rebuild or another tranny from the junk yard.

Why wont my 97 jeep grand cherokee shift from 2nd to 3rd without letting completely off the gas

Sounds like the governer in the tail housing of the trany. is stuck. Or if it has a cable for the shiftting mechanicanism that runs to the throtel body the cable may be broken or out of adjustment.

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo hesitates in 2nd gear when cold

Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.

Auto gear problem

You will want to check your transmission governor transducer on your transmission, and if you have to replace that...after you begin to drive it the computer system programs the shifting for you. It takes a couple days to get back to normal shifting. Run diagnostic testing on the transmission first, and see if you get a communications failure.
