I have a automatic diesel car. when i take off normally going into 3rd gear goes into it with a thump. if i drive off with more speed, it changes gears very smoothly. would this have anything to do with the oil in the transmission box?
Thank you for replying, i just got a mechanic to change the fluid but problem still there. Would what you suggested be very expensive to do? ie sticking or broken valve springs. Its a march 2001 rover 75 cdt 2.0 diesel auto by the way.
Depending on the year of the vehicle most manufactures not all have a specific type of fluid for the transmission. newer ones( what year is the vehicle?) this could be a sitcking valve in the valve body or a broken 2-3 valve spring in the valve body of your transmission, or a broken servo spring.

you will have to say what model transmission you have
if it is an automatic , it could be an actuator problem but if it is a CV transmission ( like an auto but with no gears but a drive belt between to varying pulleys ) whay you describe could be normal
run the fault codes to check for faults
No make, model, year, etc, or even if you're referring to an automatic or manual gearbox. If it's a four-speed manual, you may have bearings going on your countershaft. The first three gears transmit torque through the countershaft, the fourth gear is (usually) direct drive and doesn't go through the countershaft.
you have effectively got two gearboxes in the car.1is a normal auto (D) ON THE FLOOR then you have + and - for the "manual" take your pick....now here is the clever part,if you put the car in auto "D"and dont touch the gas the car will accelerate to about 35 on the flat.and will change as per a normal auto,if then when you stop you put 1/3rd gas pedal and hold that position it will go right upto about 65,stop then puit your foot right to the floor (kickdown)and the car will fly...stop...you have just reset the gearbox..try and keep to 1/3rd gas for about 25miles and you will see a big difference in gear changes/revs (smoother)but boring....
does it start in neutral and park? if yes, linkage should be ok. The trans has it's own computer. you can buy used for about $50 from EBay or car-part.com
