Question about 1998 Isuzu Trooper

2 Answers

I have a 1998 Isuzu Trooper. The battery keeps going dead. I bought a new battery and took the alternator off and had it checked. The alternator is good and the battery keeps dying. Is there a fuse I am missing or something else I can check?

Well, not necessarily a fuse, but a current draw. You need to find the draw.

Pull the fuse for the interior lights (so you can open doors and not alter your tests) and clock. Take off negative battery cable and put the volt meter or test light in series between batt terminal and cable. If the light lights or volts higer that a couple of volts, disconnect items one at a time and re test.

Start with the alternator, it is the most likely. It has a series of diodes that change current from alternating to DC, when one fails it leaks current. The unit may still charge, but not as well as with good diodes. The only test for diodes is a scope, or take it apart and test them individually. Use ohms and current flow in one direction, reverse test leads and no current. Failed diode will flow or connect in both directions.

Anyways, you will have an answer pretty quick if you test battery current draw and disconnect one system at a time and retest.

With one battery lead off, connect in an amp meter and measure the current draw with everything turned off. If there is more than 0.02 amps current draw, something is on/going and making your battery go flat.

Charging system 1998 isuzu not charging trooper

Maybe the battery has dead cells, how old is the battery? There most likely is a manufactures warranty and may be replaced for free. You can also bring the battery in somewhere (like Autozone, Valvoline Oil Change, pretty much any car part store) and they can test the battery for you. Also make sure the connections are tight and no corrosion on the battery itself. I know I have a battery tester and it will tell you the health of the battery, which is what the auto part stores can also do, then you can go from there.

Replace alternator and still not charging

Possible you have an old battery with maybe a dead cell? I would have it tested.
Make sure all battery and alternator connections are clean and tight. A loose or poor connection can cause no charging. Check all your underhood fuses, too.
Good luck.

I have 1998 Isuzu Trooper and my battery keeps losing power. I took my alternator off and had it checked it is good. I bought a new battery and it was drained in a day. Is there a fuse i need to check?

No, I don't know about a fuse, but something is running, like the fuel pump, when you shut it down crawl underneath and listen for a hum, They have been know to stick in the on position, Make sure it is quiet in the shop or garage or do it at night outside with no traffic, If it is running, replace, in the meantime, disconnect the battery terminal when it is off. Too many drains on the battery and it will be shot. If it is not the fuel pump, put an ear on other areas of the truck and see if you hear something running, stuck on, buzzing, humming. Hope this helps.

Have a 1997 Isuzu Trooper. The battery will not charge, has new alternator on it. Any ideas??

Check the large cable on the alternator to make sure it has 12 volts on it with the engine not running,if it does not, then this is the problem, running a new one to the positive side of the battery to this terminal on the alternator will solve the problem.

Our R reg Isuzu Trooper diesel 4x4 occasionaly discharges its battery overnight. It has had a new Alternator (and Starter) since the fault arose but it still does it about once a month. Any ideas?

Please check the cutout. Sometimes it does not disengage and thus keeps discharging the battery even after the vehicle has been switched off.

Alternator removal on 1997 Isuzu Trooper

My son just got the alternator off of my Trooper (1997) and he said removing the wheel is not necessary. He took off 2 bolts from the top and several from the bottom that were very difficult to remove but then the alternator came off pretty easy. He says if it loose then it should come off pretty easy, if it is not loose, you must be missing a bolt somewhere. He also says is you are in our area, call him and he will take it off for $100 =)
