Question about Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

My '96 RAV4 died while I was driving it. I thought it was an alternator or battery issue because the electical system was losing power. However the mechanic (who changed the oil & inspected the car the day before) said my timing belt snapped in half, which caused the engine to lock and now the valves are bent. Is that possible?

Yes it is...
usually a timing belt or chain has to be changed every 100,000 miles...
if it doesn't then it might crack of...then it might also bust the engine like your mechanic told you...
if you did change it on 100,000 miles them i don't think what your mechanic said is true...it might be an electric problem...
Good Luck!

Disconnecting the battery cable while the vehicle is running is a no no ! The electronic's on your vehicle , you can cause some serious problem's doing that . That was ok on 1960 era vehicles , from 1970 on with all the transistors in the electronic control modules ,you don't want to do that . You may have caused your problem yourself ! http://www.troubleshooters.com/dont_disconnect_battery.htm .Take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop .

I have a toyota rav4 2006 and my battery light came on, what could be the problem?

Assuming a healthy car battery - most probable cause is dying alternator not supplying enough current to recharge the battery. The battery light lights up when it doesn't supply enough power.

Most plausible fix either a replacement of the alternator or the voltage regulator. Refurbished alternators can be supplied by Toyota as well.

Less common is a broken belt driving the alternator.

Sounds like a fuel problem. you could try hooking a pressure gage up to your check valve on your fuel rail see if you are losing fuel pressure. maybe a fuel filter or something thats just one thing it could be out of a bunch of things something you may want to try. does is start bucking or anthing or just straight lose all power and die?

check the alternator voltage , it has to be 13.8 to 14.4 vdc. it sounds like your car is running off the battery alone. Sometimes a bad battery will take out an alternator, and after replacing it goes again.Check all connections, and check the feedback terminal on the alternator is telling the alternator to switch on.

The battery on my 2003 Audi A6 keeps dying. I

Sound's like a bad alternator, you can check the alternator by measuring the voltage on the battery when the car is started, it should measure above 12.6 volt's but not higher than 14.5 volt's, check the drive belt tension, a lose or wore drive-belt could cause problem's with the alternator charging the batery, check the battery terminal's for corrosion, along with the connection's of the battery cable's.
Hope this help's, good luck.
