Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

1998 Ford explorer , had sitting every winter months in garage, usually start right up every spring. put in charged battery,,would not start. Seems like the fuel pump is not pumping out any fuel. I loosened a fuel line,,nothing when trying to start. Why would fuel pump go bad when not in use? How to change fuel pump if need be? Is it in tank? Any other causes that would be the problem? Thanks

The pump is in the tank. The tank has to be droped to replace it. Pumps can go bad at anytime without warning. A failing pump you may not have noticed but can go bad when sitting. Try checking the autoshut down relay and fuses assiciated with the pump. Seems its not getting power or has failed.

2013 ford explorer has dim yellow headlights even on high beam, alternator seems ok

That would be a failing battery, dead cell, or bad grounds on both lighting circuits. Have the battery stress tested in a garage. The test takes 30 seconds and is free.

The alternator just charges the battery.

First use a battery charger to charge the battery, instead of a jump start. Second, with a complete dead battery you may want to pull the connection for the horn under the hood till the battery is completely charged.

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus. Got a new battery (First I ever had to replace) after putting it in (same spec battery as the factory one I replaced) the Car alarm makes the Lights flash for about 1-2 mins...

To disable the alarm you must go to the specialised ford garage. They will hawe all the codes and equipment to fix that. You may want to stay away fromunqualified guys. They will charge you for the job, but the problem can come out again.

My 92 explorer will not start when i turn the key i only get a click what could it be?

Either the battery is low on charge, or the starter is going bad. The battery is low on charge is the more likely cause in the winter months.

Also, the battery could be bad and is in need of replacement, assuming that it can be charged to 12 v or above.

The CCA may be low on the battery.

Good luck on this repair.

remove battery and have it tested a your local auto parts store. Most auto parts stores like autozone or advance auto will test it for free. batterys will loose charge if they are old and have been sitting around for a period of time. If you have battery charger, set it up and put a low charge on it for 20 mins to a half hour. then try to start it again. If the battery is in good shape, check the cables to starter and ground. If that doesn't help you might have to remove the starter and have it tested.

When I shut off the motor sometimes it wont start. I just bought a new battery 2 months ago. When I turn the ignition the starter doesnt even make a clicking sound. I can jump it or let it sit a couple of...

It might be your anti-theft alarm system. When the car doesn't start, is there a ticking sound inside the car? If so, hit the unlock button a few times on your keyless entry remote, until the ticking stops, then try to start the car. Hopefully this helps.

The explorer has been sitting for 9 months. I charged the battery and replaced the fuel filter. I checked the re-set for the fuel pump inside the vechile too, but can not get the engine to turn over

Will it crank at all or do you turn the key and it does nothing? If it does nothing when you turn the key but all your lights come on in the dash then try smacking the starter with a hammer while you have somebody turning the key. Sometimes when things sit electric motors don't like to work because they get stuck, givin them a smack or two will usually make them come out of it. Same is true with the fuel pump, if you don't hear it come on when you turn the key you can bang on the bottom of the fuel tank .

My car has been sitting idle for about three months. where do i connect negative plug to jump start battery

The air conditioner compressor is a good place. Where one of the mounting bolts goes through the compressor to bracket. Just in case; the a/c compressor is on right side of engine as you face the front of the car.

"check system charging" is coming on at high RPM's

You have an alternator problem, have Kragen auto or a store like it test the alternator for proper operation, it's free.
