It will be a belt driven pump. Some are buried behind cylinder head on passenger side, by firewall.

Why is it hard to turn the steering wheel?

Check the level of your power steering fluid and have your pump checked. You are probably just low o fluid.

Severe powersteering leak. can I drive with bad leak or no fluid?

if its a slow leak yes. but if its squeeling I wouldn't. My 98 nissan could hold the fluid for about two weeks. could be as simple as tightnening a hose.

Powersteering and transmission fluid How to check

the power steering has a resavour near the fender with a lid on it remove the lid and it has a dip stick on it as long as it's on the stick it's OK. The transmission uses Mercon dextron III and it's important to check with the engine running and to not over fill it. From the low part to the high it's only half a quart so when adding put in in a litttle at a time and check it each time and if it doesn't look right chack it several times as the oil can be on the sides of the dip tube. and too low is bad too. If in doubt. have this work done by a trained perfessional as being wrong can be very expensive.

Sounds like a hamster in a wheel

After about 3 - 4 years, a powersteering pump accumulates a lot of metal specs, once they start building up, your pump starts choking, and wont be able to let the fluid flow through and basically fry itself. My advice, have a shop, drain and flush your power steering pump / fluid. You can even do it yourself, but it requires 2 people; Lift front end up, on jacks followed by stands, unhook the powersteering pump line, turn car on, and have your friend, mom, father w.e turn the wheel from left to right, let the old fluid drain out, one old fluid is out, pour NEW powersteering fluid into the pump, you will need to let it flow through, so it flushes itself out. Remember to put a large pan underneath where the pump is so you dont get fluid everywhere, be prepared to buy at least 3 - 4 bottles of fluid. Let 2 bottles run through, then put the pump line back on and fill 'er up.

Then your done, drive and see.
