Question about Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

I have a 2004 chevy silverado 1500 with 4x4 on the floor. its approaching 100,000 miles and i belive the transfer case is what is making noise, because i hear grinding/clunking when it shifts (when it is in 2wh). at that is at low speeds. i put in in 4wh some noise but not as much as when its in 2wh. and same thing with it in 4wl. could this be because i dont have any or old fluid in there or because the gears are not engaging correctly. please i need help

I would recommend that you check your fluid level in your transfer case. i have a 2003 chevy 1500 4wd and lost my transfer case. all of the fluid was slowly lost due to a hole punched in the case by an internal ring. this is a known problem caused by the aluminum ring creating a hole in the softer magnesium case. if you have lost your fluid it is likely that your transfer case is bad. this could be the cause of the grinding you are hearing, likely your driveshaft will be loose at the rear output shaft. you may also have problems in your speedo gauge because of the loose driveshaft. if the transfer case is bad it is likely you will need to replace it. (not cheap) there are some after market parts that can be added to the transfer case to prevent the hole from being punched if the case is not already bad. check out http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/np261.html they have the after market parts and a better explanation.

I don't think you will know whats going on until someone takes the transfer case apart. It could be the shifter stuck in mid position and it is not completely in either position.

My chevy has about 98000 miles. When is tune up recommended.what is involved in the tune up?

what engine? The fuel filter is in the fuel tank, Spark plugs should be replaced, throttle body cleaned, and the truck generally checked over, battery , belts, brakes, tires ect. Spark plugs, trans fluid, filter, transfer case fluid change, are all due at 100k. You should have the 100K service done. Of course they base that on if you have been following the service schedule. Your owners manual will list all things that are due.

Noise comming from transfer case on my 2007 chevy 2500 hd, was told at dealership that my steering box was bad, could that noise be from steering box, is box located in the same area as transfer case

No, the steering box is located in the left front and the transfer case is located in the center of the vehicle. If the vehicle has under 100,000 miles and it is the transfer case it should be under warranty.

Silverado makes weird noise at 70 mph. Mechanic said it's the transfer case and also found a leak therein - wants $400 to take it apart to find the problem or we can just replace. Not sure what to do - pay...

It's probably the chain in the transfer case. I had mine replaced at 150,000 miles and it cost $1500.00 to do a full rebuild. And that included them removing and installing the transfer case and a new yoke for the driveshaft.( Because the play in the transfer case grooved the old one.)

What is the recommended service for 2004 chevy

Service your cooling system every 5 years or 150,000 miles. The GM Dex Cool has a life of 5 years or 150,000 miles which ever comes first. Replace the thermostat also and buy the fail safe thermostat, it cost a bit more but worth it.

Service the engine (spark plugs and wire) every 100,000 miles or till engine management prompt attention. (service engine light DTC code)

Service the transmission every 3 years or 60,000 miles, replace the transmission oil and filter. Transfer case fluid and differential fluid.

Service the engine oil and filter every 6 months or 3,000 miles. Lube Chassis

Service the air filter and cabin air filter, wiper blades every 15,000 miles or once a year.

2003 Chevy needs transfer case replaced for the 2nd time

I just had my transfer case rebuilt on my 2002 2500 silverado duramax. They told me that the spring that holds the pump inplace in the transfer case wore a hold through the case. He said this was common on these transfer cases. Chevy has not acknowledge the problem. He designed a steel plate, with flanges that holds the pump in place and will not wear a hole in the case again. And as far as the post to engage it once a month, the chain turns even when in 2WHL drive.
