Avoid a dead battery

If your battery is discharging while the van is parked up, there's 3 general causes:
  • The battery itself is failing and cannot hold a charge. replacement is the only option.
  • There is a fault within the alternator - either the alternator is not charging or it is allowing the battery to drain because the diodes (the rectifier in the alternator) have failed.
  • There's a parasitic drain of power somewhere. Something is remaining 'live' when the van is parked up - and draining the battery.
Many places will do a free battery check.

Flashing battery light on 1992 Chevy Astro

There are a few different things that can cause your problem. When the problem is occurring, disconnect the alternator plug, start the engine and measure voltage with a voltmeter. Connect a test light to 12V, reconnect the alternator connector and back probe the brown wire with the test light. Check to see if the alternator charges else, replace the alternator. Also, you may have a faulty instrument cluster. If you need more help on how to repair your alternator I would suggest checking out this sites HowTo section

1997 Chevrolet astro van replace alternator at first it charges then 30 seconds later it stops charging.

You would need to check the circuit from the dash to the alternator and from the alternator to the starter or battery.
It could be a defective voltage regulator inside the alternator.

Have a 92 astro van ext. alternator and battery are good but as im driving the battery dies and is not charging .. the charging light on the dash stays on.....any ideas as to what it could be?

If the battery symbol stays on on your dash, it is the alternator. I had a 91 Astrovan and the light was blinking and then finally stayed on. Talked to a mechanic at Pepboys and he said that was a bad diode in the alternator. Also, make sure that your battery cable is good and clean.

I have a 1997 gmc safari van 6cyl. and it has a new battery a new starter and a new altenator bt still will not hold a charge in the battery.

If you have no shorts that are draining the battery you may have gotten a defective alternator. Cheap rebuilt or remanufactured alternators from Mexico are common. I have bought 2 that failed to function right from the parts store. Poor quaility control at the plant. Ask them to check it a Autozone or Advance auto . They do this at no charge. Because of the difficulty and lack of space to work in the cramped quarters of a van. have the parts checked before you pay for it. It stinks when you have to do this once on a van anything more is infuriating. It best to have it tested before you accept the part, and only takes a minute when it is out of the vehicle. Good luck with your van. I will never buy another without having it tested before I leave the store. ever.

I replaced the alternator and still has the same problem . Battery gauge will go up and down. Voltage will change from 12.5V to 14V. If the van is running I cannot disconnect the battery without it dieing....

Sounds like a voltage regulator, but that is internal to alternator these days. Should have been replaced with the alternator.

Suggest you take to auto parts place and ask them to test your batery/charging system. They will normally do for free.

My 1997 chevrolet astro is eating my batterys and i checked all the basics like lishts radio ect.

Sounds like the alternator isn't working properly. If the battery is being "cooked" or overcharged the voltage regulator (built into the alternator) is broken. If it's not being charged enough, same problem. Either way, I believe you'll need to replace the alternator or at the very least have a shop replace the voltage regulator.

Alternator not exciting

Hi ' If you changed the battery and alternator,
Check the voltage at the red wire on the alternator. if there a less than 12 volt.
Check the fuse link, that goes in the starter positive bolt.
If the fuse is bad replace and recheck the charging system.
IF charging normal. good.
If not, che the fuse in the fuse box, "" cluster".
If the fuse is blow out, replace. and check again.

OK. I hope this work for you.
