Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

My jeep had trouble startng but eventually did and ran great. Then just cranked and didnt start. Replaced starter. That didn't work. Replaced crank sensor, that solved the no start problem for a week. Now just cranks and cranks, but don't start.

The first thing to check is the fuelpump preasure, make sure the compressor is pumping enough preasure, these are famous for fuel pumps going bad.try sparying starting fluid into throtle and see if it starts, this will tell you its a fuel problem.

How do I fix a starter problem , will not turn over.

barn find. (did you spin engine by hand yet?)
Fuse first, did you check them first?
PDC fuse 2? and JB F20 (only A/t has F20) so......
no transmission stated, Auto or STICK.(yup different)
sure all cars ran good once, its a fact, unless some French Citroen?
sorry, no reset magic,
you get to diagnose it.
I guess it's an automatic transmission.???
this is a ZJ jeep, the book on it (real) is free.

So now no more big secrets on your car, the real book.

does it crank with shift'er wiggled>?
does it crank in neutral as the operators guide tells?
are battery lugs, not GREEN with corrosion.?
sure hit side of starter gently, to wake it up. (3 years rust inside?)
can you turn engine by hand(using a wrench on that large pulley bolt)>??
starter bolts tight, (it needs a ground so mount must be tight)

every way and test is here.

chapter 8w in link 1 ABOVE COVERS THIS.
marked WIRING.
page. 8w-21 page2, is a bingo
remove starter relay out, bonce on table 1 time.
put back, (kind of a relay reset,)
when cranking do you have 10-12v at "A":
and same at "B"
if A is dead, we check the coil on relay next for power cranking.

if the Relay coil D11 has 12vdc cranked then fuse is good.
if not f20 is blown
if stick shift car, the clutch switch bad. lacking 12v here.
if have 12v at D11 pin
then the Park neutral pin D13 is failing and seen at 12vdc cranked.
that is all there is, (using a volt meter)
or learn to hot wire starters, and save all that work.
covered on link 2.

working with no voltmeter, will be very very hard,
got one?

what if the barn car , was parked 3 years ago
with a bad head gasket (water leaking), and now some cylinders are seized from water/rust damage.
I'd put oil in each cylinder, sparks out.
1 teaspoon and turn it by hand first.
this lowers chances of ring damage. this method.

Wont start after running for a while. service lights work, radio, headlights but wont crank. just replaced starter, got new battery about a month ago. after 5-8 hours car starts with no problems.

Hot does make a difference. You say it won't start, but does it crank and not start, or not even crank? If cranks but will not start, any electrical part may fail as it heats, and when you shut it off the engine gets much hotter since coolant is no longer circulating. Thus, a marginal crank or cam sensor, or coil/ignition module may work while cold of while engine is running, but fail when you first turn car off.

My 96 grand cherokee is shutting down, have replaced almost everything but crank sensor will this be the end of my problems???please help

If the crank sensor is failing, you should get a check engine light and a trouble code for it.
Have you had the computer checked for trouble codes ?

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L is very difficult to start if it has not been run in the previous 6 hours. Replaced ignition coil but didn't solve the problem. After sitting overnight it

Low fuel pressure.
You need to check the fuel pressure on the first crank and watch it as it is running.
Requires a special gauge.
If it were just a starting problem I would say it could be a pump relay, but not if it runs rough for 5 min.
Might be a dirty filter or problem in the tank.

Ran out of gas in a 2001 jeep cherokee limited 4.7 awd now it wont crank is it the fuel pump or is there a relay or reset

Not aware of any re-set on Jeeps. But you said it won't crank? Starter is not working? Please clarify.
If it won't crank over from the starter, your problem is in the start circuit, and not affected by fuel pump operation. So, please reply.

Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. I don't think your security system is the problem? At the starter motor two voltage circuits, one is fuse protected and is hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position and relay is energized. Any testing at relay or starter motor, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.

Just wondering if the senor could be a bad one. Open your gas cap and turn your ignition on and have someone back there to listen into the filler tube. They should hear the fuel pump kick on, if not you problem is it. I had a jeep and did all the work on it, including a new fuel pump, crank sensor, water pump, radiator and everything else. GOOD LUCKKKKKK

Trouble startng 98 jeep

Sounds like a fuel problem. Could also be plugs fouled out. Try running some injector cleaner though it, or even hooking up a trouble shooting tester on it. I invested in one for my vehicle. They don't cost too much. It really sounds like fuel is not getting through the injectors.
