Question about 1984 Ford F 250

Open Question

I have a 1984 coachman rv with a ford 460 gas engine. the engine lost power and died. will idle when carb cleaner sprayed into carb. is there a fuel cutoff switch that needs to be reset? could it be a fuel filter? if so where? could it be in the fuel tank selection module? I don't hear a fuel pump running.

how hard was it to pump it by hand?Iwould be suprised if a mechanical fuel pump could be easily pumped by hand as the spring pressure required to hold the arm against the eccentric is considerable If its a cleveland or windsor you cannot pump by hand.I own a 1980 running a cleveland and found that if you put an electric pump as close to the fuel tank as possible and have a good original mechanical pump fuel delivery is no longer a problem.I had to do this as soon as i went to a 600 holley as the original pump was not able to supply sufficient flow.the electric pump doesnt have to be an expensive hi volume type,it only has to help to get fuel to the mechanicl pump

Running tank one empty could have picked up **** from the bottom of the tank and clogged the in line filter that feeds the engine. It should be located under the truck on the left inner frame rail around the back of the cab area. Replace it don't try to clean it out it will just clog again. Can you pump the gas pedal or spray carb cleaner into the throttle body to keep it running ?

Check the engine intake and all vacuum hoses for leaks, do this with a can of spray carb cleaner, if you hit a leak the idle speed will change. Repair what you find.

Have a 90 f-250 5.8 gas burner. sat in a warehouse for 2 years. new battery and gas. starts and idles great. run up rpms for 2 minutes and it starts choking out. let off fuel and goes back to idling...


Carburetta is fouled. Run fine on choke - rich mixture. As it warms up and choke pulls off, its starving for gas.
First try adding fuel system cleaner to the gas tank. Do NOT go overboard. No more than double the recommended mix ratio.
The alternative is to remove the carb, open the bowl and spray out the jets and venturi with carb cleaner.

Its possible you may help it by removing the air filter and spraying every orifice you find on top of the carb. With carb cleaner. Be very carefull not to flood, pool carb cleaner in intake as this is not healthy for engine either. You can do this with engine running, so as not to pool, but slowly is best, both in engine speed and volume of carb cleaner.

Make sure when your spraying that you have a spray tube on it for pinpoint testing. Then disconnect one line at a time and plug both ends until you find the one that changes idle. Spraying without a tube will allow vapors to be picked up by the intake and give you a false reading. Also spray a short burst at each intake to head runner, could be an intake gasket.

It sounds to me like there is still a pretty good vacuum leak somewhere, and you should also check for any dis-connected or missing vacuum lines on the intake manifold, at the carburetor, and the large vacuum hose to the brake booster unit and the vacuum valve at the brake booster unit for any vacuum leaks or broken vacuum lines/hoses, and they can be hard to find because cracks in the vacuum hoses like to hide on the under-side of the vacuum lines/hoses especially the hard plastic ones. Also the carburetor could be loose or the carburetor base gasket could be damaged, the EGR valve gasket could be damaged, or the intake manifold gasket could be damaged, and these are all the most likely places to suspect a major vacuum leak.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.

You seem to be describing a VERY lean gas mixture.
The spark plugs get VERY hot - so they do not need the power from the key to keep running... they fire gas until the fuel pump gas dries up (or the carb float bowl) - AKA dieseling.

Lean mixtures idle high - and can burn valves.
So, it is carb or FI? IF carb - something is reducing the flow of gas through the jets. Fuel pressure, dirt, clogged fuel filter.

Best/cheapest 1st shot at fixing this would be to spray carb cleaner in the carb with the engine running.
Second, add fuel line cleaner/gas additive to the gas tank.
If you see no improvement after driving 20 to 30 miles, then it is time to take it in to a shop and have the timing checked (advanced timing will lean out the combustion chamber mixture). Then fuel pressure test and finally, filter replacement.

Almost certainly one of the above will improve/cure the problem.

1984 RANGER IDLE PROMLEM...WONT IDLE CORRECTLY.


First check:
Your EGR valve is carbon up and is sticking open. You have to take it off and clean with carbon cleaner. (EGR controls idle)

Second check:
Could be fuel pump is starting to go on it.

89 Has EFI not carb. I vote to give you a ZERO!! The problem is more likely the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE (no sh!@#) "IDLE"????
