Look for an air leak in the pipe from the inlet manifold to the vacuum canister.or the canister itself.

well, a hard firm pedal, usually indicates a bad brake booster or a vacuum leak to booster or the vacuum check valve, on booster. TO TEST BRAKE BOOSTER; pump brakes several times with engine off to deplete stored vacuum. turn on engine with pushing slightly on pedal. you should feel the pedal fade away a bit and then become firm, but not hard. if you feel nothing at the pedal when engine starts the booster is at fault. good-luck !!

After having changed the rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders, and bled them the pedal was good. Then the pedal was going to the floor slowly so I had to pump the brakes to get enough stopping power....


It sounds that you have done a pretty good job at this point. Remember that the brake adjustment will dictate the amount of brake pedal. Recheck to make sure the right brake linings were used. Recheck to make sure the brakes on the rear are adjusted up as far as possible. As far as the bleeding, I have had many cars that will not bleed the sytem without the engine running to give it the pressure needed to pass through the master cylinder and lines. Have a WELL ventilated area, car in neutral, wheels chocked, and bleed the brakes with the engine running. Remember to take all safety precautions to avoid injury before attempting this.

Can;t get the caliper to recede to install new pads


YOU NEED TO REMOVE 2/3 BRAKE FLUID FROM THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR.YOU WILL NEED A LARGE C- CLAMP TO BOTTOM THE PISTON INTO THE CALIPER BORE USING A OLD BRAKE PAD OR WOODEN BLOCK ACROSS THE FACE OF THE PISTON.DONT DAMAGE THE PISTON OR THE CALIPER BOOT.WARNING WHEN FINISHING PUTTING ON NEW FRONT BRAKE SHOES.PUT COVER ON BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR MAKE SURE BRAKE FLUID NOT LOW.PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL UNTIL BRAKES FEEL FIRM THEN CHECK BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AGAIN ADD MORE FLUID IF NEEDED UNTIL LEVEL CORRECT.YOU ARE DONE. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOLID FIRM BRAKES BEFORE DRIVING.YOU WILL NEED THREADLOCKER GM P/N 12345493 ON THE CALIPER BOLTS OR EQUIVALENT THE AUTO PARTS STORE WILL HAVE THREADLOCKER.

Adjusting the parking brake on 03 pontiac vibe


If you look under the van on the driver side (usually) you'll see where the two cables from the rear inter-connect with the main cord to the front. Here, you should find an adjustable bolt that you can tighten. If it is not here, it may need to be tightened from there rear tires.

If you have drum brakes in the rear, these are most likely "self-adjusting" brakes, which may interact with the emergency brake. Everytime you back up, and apply the brakes, you are activating the self adjuster (you would have seen this located at the bottom of the brake system between the two brake pads. This is the self adjuster. Try going in reverse at about 5 miles per hour, and hitting the brakes firmly (not slamming on them). Drive forward again, and firmly press the brakes. Go in reverse again, and apply brakes firmly again; (do this about 4 or 5 times to get the rear brakes adjusted). Try the emergency brake again and if still not tighter, purchase or look in your repair manual as to how to adjust the emergency brake.

How do i change the front brakes on a 1991 oldsmobile cutlass ciera. i already have the brake paids


Hello, open the hood locate your brake fluid take the top off, than you want to losen the lug nuts one the wheel enough so they turn by hand. Jack up the car high enough to get a jack stand under it and the wheel is off the ground. Once the car is supported securely remove the lug nuts and wheel. Once the wheel is removed remove the screw on the bottom of the brake caliper, remove the old pads. Rotate the caliper upward, using a C-clamp and a old brake pad push the piston back in the caliper. Position the old brake pad to cover the piston and the C-clamp in the center of the old brake pad and slowly turn till the piston is fully retracted in the caliper. Install the new pads, put the caliper back in position, put the caliper screw back in double check work. Once every thing looks ok put the wheel back on, only hand tighten the lug nuts, make sure the wheel is tighten evenly. Remove jack stand, lower the car tighten the lug nuts using a crossing pattern once that is done pump the brakes, till they get firm, after they get firm start the car pump the brakes a few more times. The fun part take it for a test ride but allow your self more than normal distance to stop.

Fading brake pedal when engine running , have replace front pads, master cylinder and bleed entire system, pedal is firm with engine off but once started pedal fades to floor


Hold pedal down firmly with vehicle not running. Now start it up still holding pedal down firmly. Does it go to the floor when engine is started? If so I would look at the brake booster. It may be defective.

Toni Here - I have 2000 Lincoln LS - 5 speed - the brake light in the back rear window - cyclops light is not working - how do I replace that bulb please?


Firmly press down on the brake light cover. Press down into the rear deck. This will release the bezel from the teeth on the metal housing. Now slide it forward ( toward the front of the car) while holding it firmly pressed down into the rear deck. Once removed you will see how the metal teeth on the bottom of the metal housing bracket bit into the plastic bezel.
