Question about 2000 Mitsubishi Galant

Does the Galant have a external voltage regulator ? replaced the alternator and the car charged hard(18-25 amps) and then stopped. the battery had a full charge.

Doesn't have an external regulator, If battery is reasonably fully charged it doesn't need 25A + of a charge . Put on your rear window de-mister and headlights and check voltage before and during test !

depending on the variations
after starting or cranking for a while the voltage will read 14.5 to 14.8 volts as the battery charges up that reading will drop back to 13.2 volts
it will be lower at idle 12 >13 volts as the alternator speed has to be around 1,500 rpms to get the alternator to charge
using the lights and any extra power requirements the voltage will go up to max of 14.5 -14.8 volts to compensate for the extra current required
drive belt condition and tension will cause variations if it is not correct
bad connections ( dirty terminals , loose harness fittings , corrosion) will all affect the ability of the alternator /regulator to produce constant voltage
you will have to ask an auto electrician if the regulator is part of the ECM as most have the regulator in the alternator or a separate unit on the fire wall
If it not part of the ECM then the ECM will have no bearing on the readings

Don't know much about your vehicle but sounds like you may have an external voltage regulator...need to find out no matter how many alternators you change if the regulator is allowing too many Amps and voltage out..you could damage the entire charging system including the battery..confirm what your car has can checked to see if the alternator you bought has an internal reg also have your auto store go in computer an see if in deed you can order an external one for your car..if available you know it does have one or not.. But overcharge is all in the regulator..good luck..

The way to check for an over or under charge is to connect your volt meter to the battery, before starting the vehicle.
You should have a reading of 12.5 to 13 volts. If it's 11.8 like you stated or less, it means battery is not fully charged, or it's bad. Now start the car & check voltage again while running the engine, the voltage should exceed 14+ volts, this means your Alternator is charging, the voltage should drop after battery has been charging for awhile. When you turn the engine off after letting it charge the battery, & if the battery is good, you should now have 12.5 volts to 13 volts.
Now to answer your question, the Voltage Regulator is inside of the Altenator, I believe you xcan take the alternator apart to replace it, or simpler to just replace the complete alternator.

The capacity of the alternator ( 35 amp or 100amp ) will make little difference to charging a battery. It has to do with the voltage regulator which may be internal in the alternator or external on the engine bay. The other fault that will not allow a battery to charge is the rectifier as if a diode has burnt out then the voltage that is being regulated is ac and it will not work anyway. The capacity of the alternator is determined by the total current draw when everything is switched on and should be around 10 amps more than what is required. IT not then the battery will slowly drain down because the alternator is not capable of running every thing and charge the battery as well. I suggest that an accredited auto electrician be engaged to sort this problem out

that year 1986 alternator voltage regulator either external or internal follow alternator battery feed wire if you see battery feed wire going to black box mounted on fire wall you have external voltage regulator.if voltage regulator okay problem could be alternator fuse or fuse link could be faulty battery cables if cables over 20 years old but make sure alternator drive belt tension correct.

The alternator is just that-- AC Current that is rectified
to DC-- to run the car & charge the battery

Just about every car for the last 40 years has the
regulator inside the alt

How it is controlled varies from manufacture,make,
model,year,etc

You can not charge a defective battery

You may have external issues that provide
regulator control,even a bad ignition sw on

2nd newly rebuilt alternator burning out.


Due to the nature of the battery technology used with vehicles the alternator is mostly incapable of charging the battery. The car alternator is designed to keep a fully charged battery fully charged and to provide all the power for the car equipment.

The alternator charge rate is regulated by a voltage regulator. Because the alternator output is connected to the battery, the alternator and battery voltage will be the same and the voltage regulator monitors that voltage.

The lower the battery voltage the more output the alternator will produce in order to correct the situation but because a lead acid battery has a high internal resistance to accepting a charge the terminal voltage will quickly rise to the alternator regulated voltage and fool the alternator into thinking the battery is fully charged when the output will drop to the order of just a couple of amps.

Switch on the headlights or a similar load that will lower the battery voltage and the alternator will increase it's output again - but only by the amount of current the headlamps or other load is consuming.
It matters not what the alternator rated maximum output is, it is designed to provide only the necessary current and no more.

The only time an alternator should ever need to produce maximum output is when on a dedicated testbed and then only for a short duration to avoid damaging the unit. Testing the current output on a modern vehicle is not recommended except for the regulated voltage testing and a rule-of-thumb output test where all equipment is switched on and the engine speed raised while the battery voltage is monitored.

Most modern alternators use an internal voltage regulator but a few systems use a separate voltage regulator. No alternator rebuild would be complete without a regulator test and probably a new or replacement regulator, which is where the majority of charging system problems are, or the brush gear.
Assuming the wiring is ok, no alternator should suffer any harm if the voltage regulator and auxilliary diodes (if fitted) are in good order though fitting a defective or a discharged battery can cause it to overheat and be damaged.

The alternator usually just about stops producing an output when the battery voltage is in the region of 14.5/14.8 volts.
Your description indicates the voltage regulator is not working correctly - unless 40 amps was being consumed by the car equipment the alternator should not have been producing 40 amps.. I suggest you also have your battery tested

i think you have an external voltage regulator in that year , ck that first . The easy way to tell if it has an external regulator ,if it has carburated it has an external regulator if its fuel-injected its internal regulator in side the alternator.Have you checked to see how much voltage the charging system is putting out at an idle ? It should be around 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts any less then 12.5 charge light won't go out.

How to jump terminals to test external voltage regulator. this is on an ford taurus with an external regulator. There are 4 terminals, I = indicator lamp. S = stator of alternator. A = alternator or B+ of...


Jump terminals A to F and the alternator should full field and charge. If it charges then replace the regulator. if it doesn't charge replace the alternator. I remember the terminals by thinking of the word AIR FORCE .
