Sounds like an idle problem. The solution should cost you nothing. Remove the air trunking between the air cleaner and the throttle body. Have a clean cloth and some WD40 spray ready. Clean the throttle interior and the outside of the throttle plate. Apply pressure with your finger tips to the throttle plate to rotate it and continue cleaning the throttle area behind the plate and is possible the back of the throttle plate itself. Pay special attention to the edges of the throttle plate. Mounted onot the the throttle body exterior you will find the idle air control valve. This is an electrically operated device that permits measured amount of air past the throttle plate when the engine is at idle to ensure that the engine does not stall. These idle controllers can take two forms a) a simple valve on a passageway around the throttle plate or b) a geared motor that opens the throttle plate a tiny amount. Which ever system is used everything should be spotlessly clean. The IAC valve body can be removed to aid in the cleaning process. Take care not to rip any gaskets etc as you can use them again during reassembly. With everything cleaned up it should be much better. Put everything back together. If problem persists check all vacuum pipes making connection with the inlet manifold for leaks; spraying suspect areas with WD40 will result in a small jump in revs if you hit on a vacuum leak. Also check that your EGR valve is functioning properly and is closing at idle.

It starts and will only stay running if I keep my foot on the gas. As soon as I let off the car dies.

sounds like idle control valve. allows air to get into the motor if the throttle body is closed. aka your foot off the gas pedal. sometimes you can try to clean them, but most times that doesn't work.

It starts but will not idle. if you take your foot off the gas it dies. sometimes it will run good and i take it around the block it will die when i come to a stop unless i put it in neutral and keep my...

Possible areas of concern are:
  • faulty MAF (Mass Air Flo) sensor
  • bad EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator
  • bad TPS
It's most likely a combination of the 3 but the main cause would normally be the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) which regulates engine idle speeds under different conditions.

I say dont accept vehicle back form the dealer, till its right. Sounds as though the throttle position sensor orMAS is bad. The dealer really should be able to fix it.

1993 Jeep Wrangler, all of a sudden when started first thing high rev. then drops and dies without foot on the accelerator, Manual trans. What could this be.....

I suspect your Idle air control motor - typically mounted on the throttle body fuel injection models. This is not something you would typically have the right scanner to test, but your local shop should be able to test it quickly - meaning it is not an involved exam to see if it's bad. However, it IS an easy fix and if you have basic mechanical skills you should be able to change it yourself. You should be able to keep the engine running if you keep your foot on the gas lightly at all stops, but be careful not to push too hard on the gas - the engine is stronger than the brakes!! I would suggest having it towed to the shop unless your mechanic makes house calls!!

Jeep 2002 grand cherokee dies unless i keep foot on the gas...

The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.
