AQny power at all? Turn on headlights. Are they on? Yes/no.
Yes: Try to start the engine. Does it turn over on the starter? Or do the lights go out? If no cranking and no lights, check the battery terminals for correct contact, remove and clean/ refit as necessary 'til engine WILL crank (assuming battery has good charge).
No: Same with battery terminals. Try again.
That you can't even get it from park: With the ignition turned on? Look at the battery connections for this, once again. Without power, transmissions cannot be shifted.

Van not starting just one click. Brand new battery. could it be the starter motor?

Battery ground and positive cables have to be in good shape. Do any electricals work, dash lite--headlites--radio--anything? If only problem is the starter motor, then check voltage and ground for starter motor. Any testing, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.
The starter motor usually has two voltage circuits, one comes from battery, hot all the time. the other circuit usually goes hot with key in the crank position and is wired through neutral or clutch switch, depending, through possible relay.
To look up wiring diagram, I need year--make--model?

The problem is the starter motor vauxhall zafira 2.2 petrol the engine will turn over but its making a sort of wining noice as if its not teeth r not conecting to start engine over also smells of a burning...

I am not that familiar with vauxhall but starters are pretty universal it sounds as if starter is not engaging flywheel all the way either because of aexterior shimming problem during assembly or if this is something new without anyone disturbing original starter it could be solenoid that engages starter pinion to flywheel getting worn out and not engaging all the way or I have even seen where the teeth were not exacly the same angle or even count on a new exact fit oem replacement starter all of which could cause your symptoms

2001 Blazer Got in tried to start and the motor cranked. Did not start, tried to crank again and the motor would not even crank. All the fuses are good. Battery not dead just acts like a dead short.

this may help remove the starter and go to your auto parts to run a test also check battery connection must be tight at all times also run a fuel pump preasure test check if there is any spark coming from the coils check fuel pump relay and the final your engine lock.

My 2005 auto 535d wont start or even turn over at all, the battery is charged and all the dash/lights etc come on although we did discover a pool of water in the battery tray (is this common?) but this...

Hi the problem your having is going to be with the starter motor if when you turn the key the cars engine dont turn over at all you might here a faint clicking sound as you try turning the key to start the car, if the car is totally dead and the battery is good then this indicates that the starter motor is at fault.

You could try giving the starter motor a few hard hits with an hammer this often frees up the starter allowing you to start the car but it might take a few hard hits just to get it working this is not a permanent fix doing this it might get the car started but after a while the problem will come back so replacing the starter is the only long term option.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Battery is fine, starter is fine, have ignition but when i turn key switch all i get is a click click sound and the truck is not starting.

Make sure all the contacts on your battery tight are clean. Make sure your earth connector to the engine block and/or chassis is good. Check the cable that goes to your starter mother is clean and tight. I had a similar problem to this with my car a while back. I called the auto club (NRMA) out to help thinking my battery was dead. He got the ignition key and went, start off start off start off start off in rapid succession and then held it on start and the engine cranked over and started. The problem was with the contacts on the starter motor solenoid. Each time you start over the years a little spark jumps across the contacts and makes a little bit of corrosion on the surfases. I think the on off think burns a little clean patch but it is only temporary. I had my starter motor reconditioned and now it works like new again. My car is 89 model so it is about the same age as yours.

I installed a brand new battery and checked all the grounds. it worked long enough for me to turn the engine over. then the starter started clicking as if it were dead. i know the battery is fully charged....

Check the rectifier, its job is to charge the battery whenever the engine is running, however seems to be doing the opposite. Get it repaired or replaced, unless u have plans to junk the vehicle...........sodeep
