Well wrote this all out once and then just before i could send power went off ,look on cams for a slot that lines up on back of head horizontal ,piston no1 at tdc ,take a plug out ,valves on no1 closed with valves on no4 open

Removing the lower timing belt cover

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the engine under covers and drain engine coolant from the radiator; be careful not to allow coolant to contact drive belts.
  3. Remove the front right side wheel and tire assembly. Remove the engine side cover.
  4. Remove the drive belts from the engine.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft to position the No. 1 cylinder at the TDC of it's compression stroke.
  6. Remove the upper radiator hose and the water inlet hose. Remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Remove the idler bracket of the compressor drive belt.
  8. Remove the crankshaft damper. It may be necessary to use a puller to remove the crankshaft damper from the crankshaft.
  9. Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.
  10. Make sure the punch marks on the camshaft sprockets align with the punch marks on the rear timing belt cover and the punch mark on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the punch mark on the oil pump.

  1. Loosen the timing belt idler pulley bolt. Using a hexagon wrench, rotate the idler pulley to release it's tension and remove the timing belt.

Be careful not to bend the new belt installing it. Timing belts are designed to flex only the way they turn around the pulleys.
To install:
After removing timing belt, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately, because valves will hit piston heads.
  1. Confirm that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke. Install tensioner and tensioner spring. If stud is removed apply locking sealant to threads before installing.

  1. Swing tensioner fully clockwise with hexagon wrench and temporarily tighten locknut.

  1. Set timing belt, align the arrow on the timing belt forward. Align the white lines on the timing belt with the punch marks on all 3 pulleys.
There are 133 total timing belt teeth. If timing belt is installed correctly there will be 40 teeth between left and right camshaft sprocket timing marks. There will be 43 teeth between left camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks

You need to go back and check the timing marks line up in the right place before installing the new belt. If you don't, it will damage a valve or 10. Be sure you know where the timing mark or marks are supposed to line up.

Timing mark alignment for a 1992 dodge stealth dohc v6 24v

    • Disconnect the negative cable on the battery. Set it aside. Do not allow it to touch metal. Loosen the tension on the accessory drive belts by moving the tensioner away from the belt or by loosening the bolt in the slider bar to relieve tension on the belts. Remove the belts.
    • 1. Unbolt the air compressor, but do not remove the lines. Move the air compressor out of the way. Remove the air compressor mounting bracket and the belt tensioner with the appropriate socket. Place a drain pan under the power steering hoses, where they are attached to the power steering pump. Unscrew the hoses and move them out of the way. Remove the power steering pump and the belt tensioner for the power steering pump.
    • 3. Raise the Stealth with the floor jack. Support the car with jack stands. Remove the right front wheel using the lug wrench. Remove the right front inner fender panel using the appropriate socket. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, and pull the pulley off.
    • 4. Support the engine with the floor jack. Raise the engine slightly. Remove the right engine mount and mount bracket using the appropriate socket. Remove the three timing belt covers using the appropriate sockets.
    • 5. Remove the spark plug wire from the No. 1 cylinder (first cylinder on the driver's side). Remove the spark plug from the engine. Stick the long screwdriver into the spark plug hole. Turn the engine over by turning the crankshaft clockwise, keeping your hand on the screwdriver. When the screwdriver comes up and stops moving, check the timing mark on the crankshaft. If the mark does not line up at the 1 o'clock position, turn the engine over again until you feel the screwdriver go all the way down and come up again. The timing marks should line up.
    • 6. Check the timing marks on the camshaft. The left camshaft (as you are looking down at the engine) timing mark is at the 1 o'clock position. The right camshaft timing mark is at the 11 o'clock position. The marks should be lined up. If not, repeat the process to find top dead center (Step 5).
    • 7. Loosen the tensioner bolt and push the tensioner away from the belt. Tighten the bolt enough to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the belt guide and the timing belt. Check that all three timing marks are still lined up.
    • 8. Install the timing belt, working in a counterclockwise rotation, starting at the crankshaft. Work your way up over the right camshaft (looking down at the engine) sprocket, under the water pump pulley, over the left camshaft, then behind the tensioner. Keep the belt taut between the crankshaft and the right camshaft sprocket.
    • 9. Loosen the tensioner bolt, allowing the tensioner to put tension on the timing belt. Turn the crankshaft twice, lining up the timing marks again. If the marks do not line up, repeat the installation process.
    • 10. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 18 foot-pounds of torque. Install the tension gauge halfway between the crankshaft sprocket and the right camshaft sprocket. If the gauge does not read between 46.3 and 68.3 foot-pounds of torque, repeat the tensioning process (Steps 9 and 10). Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 110 foot-pounds of torque.

How do you change the waterpump on a 1991 lexus 400LS 4.o engine

The water pump is driven by the timing belt, so it is best to change that too. If I remember right the V8 has 4 cam shafts and uses a hydraulic tensioner. Since you have to precisely line up all the timing marks on the cams and the crankshaft, This job is best left to a person that has a good knowledge of this engine or a better than average skill level. failure to install the timing belt properly may result in extensive engine damage.

The procedure for timing belt removal is as follows: remove the accessory belt(s). turn the engine by hand so that cylinder #1 is at top dead center. You should have timing marks on the crankshaft ulley and the timing cover. remove the pulley. then remove the timing covers. You will have to support the engine from underneath as you need to remove the engine mount to take the belt off. INSURE that all the timing marks line up and rotate the engine as needed to achieve this. Take the belt off and then you can remove/replace the water pump. Install the timing belt and isure that all the marks line up after you reset the tensioner. Rotate the engine clockwise 2 full turns and check all the timing marks. If any are off then re install the belt again. After that put the timing cover back on and install the crankshaft pulley. then install the belt and fill the radiator. run the engine with the radiator cap off until tthe thermostat opens and add water to the right level.

How to change timing belt

    Remove the upper fan cover using a socket. Remove the cooling fan using a wrench to remove the nuts. Loosen the accessory belt tensioner with a wrench and remove the accessory drive belt.

    Remove the top timing belt cover using a 10-mm socket. Place a socket on the crankshaft and turn the engine clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the 0 mark on the timing marker plate on the lower timing cover. Look at the top camshaft sprocket and make sure that the timing V cut into the sprocket is aligned with the corresponding V cut into the cover behind the sprocket. These marks are at the 11 o'clock position. If the mark on the camshaft does not line up, the timing is 180 degrees out. Turn the crankshaft one more turn and the alignment marks will line up.

    Remove the timing belt tensioner nut and washer using a wrench. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using a socket. Remove the crankshaft damper by pulling it off. Remove the lower timing belt cover using a 10-mm socket.

    Install the washer and nut on the timing belt tensioner, but leave it loose. Pull on the timing belt to move the tensioner to the left away from the belt. Insert the 3-mm drill bit in the hole to keep it in place. Check the timing marks once more to make sure they line up. If not, align them perfectly. Remove the timing belt.

    Install the timing belt starting on the right side away from the tensioner and keeping all the tension on the right side. The belt goes from the crankshaft sprocket around the intermediate sprocket. The intermediate sprocket must have its timing marks lined up at the 3 o'clock position on sprocket and timing cover. From there, work the belt up over the camshaft and down on the inside of the tensioner.

    Pull gently on the belt next to the tensioner. Remove the 3-mm drill bit and allow the tensioner to apply tension to the belt. Install the lower timing belt cover and the crankshaft damper. Install the damper bolt and washer, and tighten to 44 foot-pounds of torque. Turn the engine clockwise two turns and recheck the timing marks. Install the remainder of components in reverse order of removal.

Hi, I am looking for a timing belt diagram for a 1998 2.5ltr Subaru Outback or can you tell me which timing marks on the sprockets line up to the encasing.

Timing Belt Cover, Belt & Sprockets Removal & Installation 2.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the drive belts.
  2. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner. Timing belt & cover DOHC exploded view subaru-03-25-6470.gif

  3. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  4. Remove the mounting bolts and left timing belt cover.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and right timing belt cover.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts and front timing belt cover.
  7. Vehicles W/ M/T: Remove the timing belt guide.
  8. Ensure that the timing belt rotation arrows are still visible. If the marks are worn off, place new rotation marks on the belt. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  9. Turn the crankshaft using a breaker bar and special adapter socket on the crankshaft. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (1), left intake sprocket (2), left exhaust sprocket (3), right intake sprocket (4) and right exhaust sprocket (5) with the notches in cylinder block and timing belt cover.
  10. Paint alignment marks on the timing belt at the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets timing marks. CAUTION
    Do not turn the camshaft sprockets with the timing belt removed. The valves heads will contact each other causing the valve stems to bend.
  11. Remove the lower right idler pulley.
  12. Remove the timing belt.
  13. Remove the upper right idler pulley.
  14. Remove the lower left (toothed) idler pulley.
  15. Remove the belt tensioner.
  16. Hold the sprocket and remove the left intake and exhaust camshafts.
  17. Hold the sprocket and remove the right intake and exhaust camshafts.
  18. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  2. Hold the sprocket and install the right intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  3. Hold the sprocket and install the left intake and exhaust camshafts with the mounting bolts. Tighten 58 ft-lb (78 Nm).
  4. Reset the automatic belt tensioner as follows:
    • Remove the mounting bolt and belt tensioner. NOTE: Do not exceed more than 2,205 lb. (9,807 N).
    • Place the belt tensioner on a press. Press the adjuster rod down gradually (using more than 3 minutes) 66- lb (165 N) or more until the adjuster rod is aligned with the stop pin hole in the cylinder.
    • Insert a 0.08 in (2 mm) diameter pin or hex wrench into the pin hole to lock the adjuster rod.
    • Install the automatic belt tension adjuster with the mounting bolt. Tighten 18 ft-lb (25 Nm).
  5. Install the lower left (toothed) idler pulley. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  6. Install the upper right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Crankshaft sprocket and oil pump cover alignment marks 2.5L DOHC subaru-03-25-4890.gif

  7. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the mark on the oil pump cover. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC subaru-03-25-6472.gif

  8. Align the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover.
  9. When the single timing mark on the right exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover, ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned.
  10. Align the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket with the notch on the timing belt cover by turning the sprocket counter clockwise (viewed from front of engine).
  11. Ensure that the double lines on the intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned when the single timing mark on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the notch on the timing belt cover. CAUTION
    • The camshafts can be rotated independently causing the valves heads to contact each other resulting in bent valve stems.
    • When the timing belt is removed the camshafts will turn to the lowest cam lobe position by the force of the valve springs. Before installing the timing belt the 4 camshafts are in the lowest lift position (valves closed).
    • When the camshafts are rotated to install the timing belts, # 2 intake and # 4 exhaust cam lobes of the left camshafts are held to push their corresponding valves down. In this position, these valves are held in the open position. Right camshafts are held so their cam lobes do not push the valves down.
    • The left camshafts must be rotated from the lowest lobe position to the position where the timing belt can be installed at the smallest possible angle in order to prevent intake and exhaust valve contact. Camshaft sprockets rotation subaru-03-25-6473.gif

    • Do not turn the camshafts in the direction shown in the illustration because the valves will open at the same time and contact each other.
    If the timing belt alignment is off the mark buy more than 3 teeth, the valves and pistons may have contact.

  12. Align the timing marks on the belt with the marks on the sprockets in the numerical order shown in the illustration.
  13. Install the lower right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
  14. Ensure that the timing mark alignment is correct and remove the tensioner stop pin.
  15. Vehicles W/ M/T: Install the timing belt guide and temporarily tighten the mounting bolts.
  16. Vehicles W/ M/T: Measure the clearance between the guide and timing belt. The clearance should measure 0.039 ± 0.020 in (1.0 ± 0.5 mm).
  17. Vehicles W/ M/T: Tighten the guide bolts 7.2 ft-lb (9.8 Nm).
  18. Install and secure the front timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  19. Install and secure the right timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  20. Install and secure the left timing belt cover with the mounting bolts.
  21. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  22. Install the A/C compressor drive belt tensioner.
  23. Install the drive belts.

the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong

Timing belt alignment

A factory service manual would help, but I'm assuming that if you had one, you probably wouldn't be on this site.

To set the timing, you need to first perform the obvious: remove the accessory drive belts, cam pulley covers, and engine fan and hub. Next you'll need to rotate the engine by hand until the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets and crankshaft are aligned with their corresponding stationary marks. The 0 degree mark on the lower timing belt cover is the timing mark for the crankshaft pulley. There is a mark (small, vertical formed indentation) for the left camshaft pulley on the backing plate behind the pulley near the 1 o` clock position. The same mark exists for the right camshaft pulley only it is on the backing plate near the 8 o`clock position (making it difficult to see). With the crankshaft placed at the zero mark, you can observed where the timing discrepancy exists.

(TIP: Once the right camshaft timing is properly lined up, etch an additional mark on the pulley's face and the backing plate at the 12 o`clock position. This will make it easier to align the pulley for furture adjustments and repairs)

To set the timing correctly, move the crankshaft pulley to 12 deg. BTDC. Being careful to not disturb the position of the crankshaft once it has been moved to that position, remove the crankshaft pulley, lower timing belt cover, timing belt tensioner, and timing belt. Compress the timing belt tensioner and if the original ring pin isn't available to retain the tensioner a small allen wrench can be used to achieve the same results. Line up both camshaft marks and reinstall the timing belt and timing belt tensioner (do not remove the timing belt tensioner tool used to maintain the tensioner piston in a compressed position). When installing the timing belt, be sure to allow the least amount of slack to exisit between the left camshaft pulley and the crankshaft sprocket, but without moving the pulleys.

Next, remove the timing belt tensioner piston retention tool and mount the lower timing belt cover and crankshaft pulley (without fully installing them). Rotate the crankshaft pulley to the 0 deg. mark. If done correctly, moving the crankshaft pulley from 12 deg. BTDC to 0 deg. will remove all remaining slack from the timing belt assembly and the camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulleys will be lined up with their corresponding marks. Once proper timing has been achieved, install all removed parts.

(Another TIP: I hope it's not necessary, but in case it is, I'll remind you that proper torque of all bolts are necessary as this is an all aluminum engine. Stripping out bolts holes due to over-tightening bolts occurs very easily and become very annoying to deal with [e.g. alternator belts not being able to be tightened completely and constantly squealing every few days, etc.])

Instructions Difficulty: Moderate Things You’ll Need:
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets ¼-inch drive ratchet Set of ½-inch drive sockets ½-inch drive ratchet Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets 3/8-inch drive ratchet Set of metric wrenches Floor jack Jack stands
Step1 Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the intake air temperature wiring, the breather hose and intake air hose. Take off the air cleaner assembly. Step2 Remove the right wheel. Remove the accessory belts. Remove the crankshaft bolt and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the power steering bolts and the timing belt covers. Temporarily install the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft pulley, which is a triangle stamped into the crank sprocket, is aligned with the corresponding triangular mark on the block. Step3 Make sure that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft sprockets. These are a line on each sprocket that runs through a tooth on each sprocket. These lines should line up in the middle between each sprocket and point toward each other. If they do not line up, turn the crankshaft one more time and they will line up. It takes two turns of the crank to one complete revolution of the cam. Step4 Loosen the water pump bolts; using the 3/8-inch ratchet, turn the water pump clockwise away from the belt and loosely tighten the bolts to keep it there. Remove the timing beltmag-glass_10x10.gif. Make sure the timing marks are aligned and install the new belt starting on the right side from the crank sprocket and working counterclockwise. Keep all the belt tension on the right side away from the tensioner. Step5 Loosen the bolts in the water pump and rotate the water pump counterclockwise to apply tension to the belt. Watch the tensioner, which is above the water pump, and apply tension with the water pump until the pointer on the tensioner lines up with the notch above it. Lightly tighten the water-pump bolts. Step6 Turn the engine two more times and align the timing marks perfectly. Loosen the water-pump bolts and, using the ratchet, apply tension to the belt until the tensioner pointers are aligned. Tighten the water-pump bolts. Step7 Install the timing-belt covers and the bolts in the power-steering pump and tighten. Remove the crankshaft bolt and install the crank pulley and the bolt, then torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 70 foot pounds of torque. Install all components in reverse order of removal.
