Gear lube not present.... or clutch throw out bearing gone...
The gear lube issue seems more inline with this engine hot evaluation...
The metal serfaces of the gears themselves will expand as the heat incresses... causing a possible metal thrashing sound when temretures are increased...
scarry eather way... have it serviced!

My 1999 1.8 petrol vectra is making a whirring noise in the engine when its steady in 5th it stops

very difficult to advise without heariing the noise ,opel vectra (vauxhall) nice motors these ,if noise stops in 5th then it could be the gearbox like the layshaft needle bearings caused by low or no oil in the gearbox ,remember 5th gear doesnt use the layshaft its on the end of the mainshaft behind the cover next to the wheel arch

I have a VW passat estate on a 51 plate, when the engine is cold the gear change is fine yet the further I go the harder it is to change gear

I experience the same problem in my '03 passat TDI130 5dr. Gearchange when hot became increasingly baulky.

VW Checked this out, linkages, clutch hydraulics etc were fine.

Solution was to have the Gearbox Oil changed. This cost about £65 and was using VW052 transmission fluid.
