Question about Chevrolet 1500

1 Answer

My truck just turned 200,000 miles, the fuel gauge all of a sudden started vibrating or bouncing back and forth, it is so fast and the bounce is such a short distance its almost hard to notice. shortly after this started, maybe two weeks, my fuel pump stopped pressurizing the line so now it takes about 3 seconds to start and i dont here the pump pressurizing when i turn the key on, do you think their just might be a bad electrical connection or a seal going out and not my fuel pump itself.

    My first impression is leaning toward the fuel pump.... ;
    The pressure fluctuations are evidence of fuel pressure (ie; fuel pump) issues.
    I would test fuel pressure from the fuel line sherader valve , and see if any fluctuations occure durring the test period in order to determine the next step... be it toward the wire harness ( bad choice !! cheaper to replace harness's than pay a mechanic to trace electrics...).

    At 200k miles... be hoping it's the fuel pump... and not the electrics...

I think that the pump and the sending unit for the gas tank which includes the fuel level sending unit will be needed to be replaced to rectify the problem.

Of course, the wiring should be checked out as well for wear of insulation before it goes into the tank. This is a common problem for older GM cars.

Good luck on this repair.

Fuel gauge

The bouncing is cuased by a fault fuel sending unit located in the gas tank. Sometimes you can change just the sender but you'll probably have to get it from your local dealership. Most parts stores will sell the sender only with the fuel pump and it can cost serveral hundred dollars. Either way you have to remove the gas tank to change it. Your gas milage problem can be cuased by a a bad fuel pressure regulator which are known to go bad on those cars.
