Question about 2001 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

We have been traveling for 7 hours today in our 2001 Ford Taurus. We had no problems; car did not run hot, got great gas mileage. We made it to our hotel and not the car will not start. It will crank but not stay on. We have no idea what could be the issue. Sometimes it should like it is having a hard time when it is idling and needs some extra gas but that goes away quickly. It has been several years since I purchased a battery and the started has not been replaced in several years. After it sat for a while it started right up. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Sounds like the battery is old and got hot from all of the use and charging that was put on it. Next time you drive the car a bit, check the battery with your hand. Be careful it may be really hot. If it is too hot to touch, replace it.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. Check your fluid levels on the car. One may be low and causing that sound you hear. More then likely, it needs a tune up. Change the spark plugs, wires, coils, coil pack, and distributor cap. Change the air filter and the fuel filter. Check for vacuum leaks on the engine. Change all your fluids. This will help your car a lot. Spark plugs will help your gas mileage a little, as well as the lack of power. This will help your car greatly.

Sounds like there might have been some dirt or sludge in the bottom of the tank that got sucked into the fuel system. First run some fuel system cleaner through it. If that doesn't work change the fuel filter.

Check to make sure the ignition wires are not to close the the DPFE wiring. The DPFE measures EGR operation. If faulty it could cause unwanted EGR operation and misfires (resulting in unburnt fuel).

Is a 2001 Taurus a bad bet?

Actually this year model and the newer ones are a fairly reliable car. The early to mid 90's car were not the best, but I am a technician and everything I have seen of these cars is pretty good as long as they are maintained properly and have been since it was new. I have seen them running close to 200k

Poor gas mileage on 2008 Ford taurus

Are you using the correct grade of fuel.
Manufacturers claim that a car will do 28 to the gallon.
This is done under ideal conditions at a constant speed on a rolling road.
Wind, hills, overtaking and tire pressures will decrease fuel mileage.
Your car is ok. Don`t expect much more unless you want to drive at 56mph
good luck
