Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

I have a 98 S-10 that was running and just stopped. We were told it was the fuel pump. Replaced it, but not getting power to the pump, no pressure in the fuel line and it will started once in awhile and the die and mostly just won't start. Put fuel in the carb and it fires for a moment. Being told it might be VATS. Looked under dash for an orange wire with two white wires and it's not there for VATS as shown on Youtub for chevys. The keys do not have chips. Security light does not flash, just stays on. What else can we try?

Look in glovebox for fuelpump relay. Swap either one that is next to eachother they are the same relay. They are ground triggered you may have bad relay or ground to fuelpump.

    Yes, we tried all the relays and fuzes. ANy other suggestions?

the operation of most fuel pumps is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator
when the fuel pump gets to set pressure , the pump is switched of by the ECM at the relay level
maybe nothing wrong with your system just the system working as designed
if you have pressure in the fuel manifold when you turn the ignition on then the pump will not run but will if there is a fuel leak somewhere and the pressure drops off

2001 Chevy Silverado have replaced the fuel filter checked fuel preasure and it falls within specifications but immediately drops off to 0 psi while the the switch is on and the pump willnot represuri


I probably did not get your post clearly.
The pump gets power from the relay in the start mode, then if the engine does not produce any oil pressure the fuel pump power is shut off. That helps prevent a fire in a wreck.
You get about 3 seconds of power to the pump when you first turn the key on, then nothing if the engine does not start.
The pump is supposed to hold pressure after it stops pumping.
Is there a problem with the truck starting ?

1996 olds 88 3.8 engine starts up runs about 15 minutes then shut down.Wait a while and will do same cycle over. I replace fuel pump, filter tank clean. No codes, engine runs find until it stops getting...


There is a fuel pump prime cycle (2 or 3 seconds)when you turn the key to on and once you start the engine the fuel pump power comes though the oil pressure switch.No oil pressure,no power to the pump.maybe your oil pressure switch has become weak?I would use a scan tool and command the fuel pump on when it does shut off,just to make sure the pump can run,as it could be a bad pump too.Also when it does quit,if you turn the key off for 10 seconds, you should get a prime cycle by turning the key to on.Have someone listen at the gas tank for a fuel pump noise,which will be only 2 or 3 seconds,but will do as a pump running check.Next would be to check for power at the back at or near the fuel pump,power and no pump.replace pump.No power to pump,follow power back to the front through oil pressure switch and fuel pump relay etc.You can always add your own power to the pump from a power source the switches off with the key if needed bypassing the existing wiring and oil pressure switch.

Not getting fuel out the ports on the cpi just replaced the hole spider so its not the fuel regulator was told to check power at cpi conection power there u think mite be the wire to the ecm or the ecm it...


Hi, there is a fuel pressure port at the rear of the intake, where you can attach a guage. The pressure should be 55-60 psi. If the pump does not run for a couple of seconds, when you turn the key on, or constantly while cranking, you need to see if there is power and ground at the pump. if there is power and ground, and it does not run, there is an in tank fuel pump issue. Low end power issues. Better @ 2000+ but never 100% gone.


I'm surprised it even starts, fuel pressure is vital for proper atomisation of fuel, i would start there

I ran out of gas.Gas is starting to get low again. The car has no power, it will only go 5 to 20 miles an hour. Help!


Check the fuel pressure with a gauge. Also check to make sure the gas tank is not building up vacuum. See if leaking the cap loose helps?
Change the fuel filter.
If pressure too low, probably pump.
If too high, then pressure regulator.
Running out of gas is not good for the fuel pump, but it should not be that delicate.

Car cut off and will not start


Since spraying starting fluid in the car it runs, tells you that the problem is fuel related. You need to check the fuel system step by step completely. It seems you have done some of the checks already, but you don't say weather you checked if you get fuel on both sides of the fuel filter. If you only get fuel on the inlet side and not the outlet, your fuel filter is clogged, so replace it and recheck. If no fuel on either side and you say the fuel pump works check the fuel pump relay. Don't just replace the computer before all checks are made the relay, fuse and grounds, etc. This can be tiresome but can also save alot of money if you check system and don't skip steps you'll find your problem.

Update to this problem: Told to try starting fluid, no response.


Get a good psi reading on the fuel pressure. These engines are very picky if the pressure is + - more than 7psi it will not open the injectors correctly.
Is it a vortec?

Fuel pump not staying on 1993 k1500 350


Some GM products also incorporate the oil sender switch into that circuit for fuel pump, so that in case of an accident, engine shuts off, oil pressure drops, in turn, shuts off power to fuel pump. May be worth a look at what your getting for oil pressure, as well as checking switch/sender.

Was there fuel pressure before you changed everything? It could also be the pressure regulator sticking or bad. When you crank it over and let off the key you should hear the fuel pump run for a couple seconds and then shut off. If it is doing that then I would be looking to see if you have likes hooked up wrong at the back of the engine or try replacing the pressure regulator.
