In the trunk there should be a multi plug near the lights on the left and right side, disconnect the plug, turn on the left or right indicator depending on what side you are working on first, use a test light (they are about $5 from your auto store) find a good earth on the vehicle body and connect the alligator clip on the test light to the earth, use the probe on the test light and touch each terminal in the multi plug until the test light blinks, that will be your blinker wire for that side, when you have found them see which colour wire it is and tag them.
Now turn of your indicators and turn on your park lights, use the same method as you used for the blinkers and tag either wire as you will only need one for the parking lights.
Now turn off the parking lights and get a friend to apply the footbrake, use the same method again and tak one wire as you only need the one for the brakes.
Now just connect the wires from the trailer to the wires in the vehicle and remember to connect the earth wire from the vehicle connector plug to the vehicle body

1985 mercedes 300 sd turbo diesel where is the best and easiest place to wire the converter and marker lights so I can pull my little trailer and have stop turn marker lights at night

Dear Hillbillypork,
You will need to find your rear light harness.
Most American cars have them inside the trunk, so they stay dry and "unsalted".
I do not remember where MB puts theirs.
Once you find the harness, take an electric meter to identify the correct wires for your converter.
Usually inside the trunk it the best place for the splices and the converter.
You may have to make a hole somewhere to pass the wires from the inside to the outside.
When I do, I caulk it.
God bless your efforts.

Trailer wiring

Trailer wiring uses the fuses for the car lights. Turn signal, running ans brake lights. Some plugs also charge the trailer battery if so wired. Check the ground wire for a good body connection. This wire often gets overlooked and can stop all trailer lights if it fails.

Your vehicle CANNOT be wired for a trailer without using the converter box. The only vehicles that do not require a converter box are the vehicles that use the stop lamp bulb as a turn signal. Your vehicle is equipped with SEPARATE stop lamp and turn signal bulbs.

To make the converter box work correctly, it must be wired according to the instructions to BOTH the stop lamps AND the turn lamps. The tail (or PARK) lamps DO NOT go through the converter box.
Your trailer uses the SAME bulb for stop and turn - THIS is the reason you need a converter.

The wire color for both your LEFT TURN and your RIGHT TURN are LIGHT GREEN/TAN. Although the wire colors are the same at the bulb sockets, these are SEPARATE circuits and must be wired to the correct wire at the converter box. (LEFT and RIGHT) The converter box will have an INPUT connection for EACH of these.

The wire color for your STOP lamps is WHITE/TAN. The converter box should only have one INPUT wire that connects to this. It doesn't matter which side of the vehicle you connect this wire to. All of the stop lamps are on the same circuit.

The converter will then have only one wire for LEFT turn and stop (usually YELLOW) this is the wire that needs to go to your trailer connector for left turn and stop.
The RIGHT turn and stop will most likely be GREEN coming out of the converter.

How do I get at the wiring to tie in a trailer

All the wiring you need is there in the trunk, and the harness plug you buy will have quick connectors to splice each lead.
So all you have to do is to run the wires out of the trunk.
You can drill a hole, but most people just loosen the bottom of a light lense, and stick it throught there.
The rubber usually is flexible enough to allow this.
But don't do it at the top, because then water could get in.

You likely need diode isolators on the turn signal wiring on the trailer, or on vehicle side connector. Your local auto parts store should have what you need, and show you how to install them.

All lights work and brake light at top works. brake lights on bottom left and right don't work. It was hook up to trailer wires connection. going down the road and when you turn on the right turn signal...

Check a few things...
- The bulbs
- Check for ground at brake lamp connectors
- Check your wiring at the connectors for power
- Check for another fuse blown
- Do not hook up the trailer until you fix the ground problem on the trailer
- On some models, there is a module to control the rear/trailer lighting system. There may be a problem in the module.

Rear turn signals don't work, bulbs are good, front signals blink fast, at first only drivers side didn't work occasionally, now neither side works at all. What's wrong?

are you sure bulbs are good ?? double check bulbs also make sure there is a ground wire from your light fixture is grounded to the body near by this might be causing your problem .. usually if front ones blink fast rear bulbs are bad ... thanks Jerry holler if you need more.

Trailer Lighting Kit

Do u have a 4,5,6,or 7 way (wire) system? If it's 4 way it allows basic hookup for 3 lighting functions:
GREEN is right turn signal and stop light, YELLOW is left turn signal and stop light, BROWN is license, and side marker lights, WHITE is ground.

5way is same as above, but adds a BLUE wire for brake signal or aux. power. Its used on pop up campers, utility and boat trailers.

6way (rectangle plug) green=right turn signal, yellow=left turn signal, brown=taillight, white=ground, red and blue can be used for brake control or auxilary. Used on small motorcycle trailers, snowmobile trailers, utility trailers.

6way Round Plug, same as above, but blue is electric brakes, and black (sometimes red,) 12v; note:sometimes red/black need to be reversed w/ blue to suit the trailer.

7way adds an additional pin at plug in for 12volt power or back up lights. Whoa! hope that answers your question w/out confusing u. Let me know if u need more info.
